  • 2014 NBA Draft lottery tonight (Tues 5/20)

The 2014 NBA draft looks like it will be deep in talent, but the 3 difference-makers at the top are highly coveted. There is no consensus who will be the #1 overall draft pick, though it will surely be one of these 3- Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, or Jabari Parker. The draft is June 26, but tonight is the Draft Lottery in which teams with a chance at the #1 overall pick will learn who will get the top pick, and what the draft order will be.
Both the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics have a significant chance at the #1 pick, and no doubt the NBA would like to see the top players land in one of those marquee cities.

Here are the odds for each lottery team to land the #1 pick-

    1. Milwaukee Bucks 25.0%
    2. Philadelphia 76ers 19.9%
    3. Orlando Magic 15.6%
    4. Utah Jazz 10.4%
    5. Boston Celtics 10.3%
    6. Los Angeles Lakers 6.3%
    7. Sacramento Kings 4.3%
    8. Detroit Pistons* 2.8%
    9. Cleveland Cavaliers 1.7%
    10. New Orleans Pelicans** 1.1%
    11. Denver Nuggets*** 0.8%
    12. New York Knicks (To Denver or to Orlando via Denver)**** 0.7%
    13. Minnesota Timberwolves***** 0.6%
    14. Phoenix Suns 0.5%

*This pick may be conveyed to Charlotte
**This pick may be conveyed to Philadelphia
***This pick may be conveyed to Orlando
****Orlando will receive this pick, or Denver??™s first-round pick, whichever is higher
*****This pick may be conveyed to Phoenix

Sixers & Knicks also need help fast and need a show-stopper and an arena-filler type player...
don't be surprised if something strange happens as it did when Patrick Ewing was drafted...

Watch for the one card to be thrown into the side of the drum, folding the corner. You can also see Stern giving a big exhale before he draws out the card.

watch the guy loading the envelops into the drum...
The fourth envelop he loads into the drum - he intentionally bangs against the internal support and inside of the drum causing a noticable dent that differentiates the Knicks' envelop from the others (difficult to see without enlarging).

Then, after tumbling, David Stern looks into the drum, turns a few envelops over to get them out of the way and clearly selects the envelop with the bent corner. Coincidence?? You decide - but this has been an interesting conspiracy theory for 30 years.

The Knicks have traded away their first round pick this year so they can't be the beneficiaries of any wonky business. I definitely see a conspiracy in the draft's history which would make me predict either the Lakers, Celtics, or Sixers winning the lottery. However all of the conspiracy stuff was while David Stern was still commissioner, maybe that was part of his pet projects, rewarding the big markets, and maybe Adam Silver isn't as concerned with all that? It would be interesting to see going forward the next couple years.
      Gotta stop feeding the trolls.

I know, but some immediate post-draft deal could still happen

There have been 2 Missouri Valley players who were the #1 overall NBA draft picks in the past. Can anyone name who they were?

In addition, 2 other players were #1 overall NBA picks who went to schools who are now in the MVC (but were not at the time these players were drafted).
Can anyone name those two #1 draft picks, one of whom is often referred to as the biggest bust of all time among #1 NBA draft picks?

                of course the answers are...
Gene Melchiorre of Bradley (1951) and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati (1960)
The 1973 selection of Doug Collins does not count as ISU was not in the MVC

Yes, Melchiorre of Bradley went #1 in 1951 to the Baltimore Bullets and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati went #1 in 1960 to the Cincinnati Royals.

The other 2 #1 picks I was referring to were Doug Collins of ISU who went #1 in 1973 to the Philadelphia 76ers and LaRue Martin of Loyola who went #1 in 1972 to the Portland Trail Blazers. Many consider Larue Martin to be the biggest bust among #1 draft picks. But both ISU and Loyola were not members of the MVC when those players played.

Here is a good list of all the #1 NBA draft picks.
