SIU avoids the NCAA penalties for low APR because they had substantial improvement each of the past two seasons before this... the escaped penalties only because a couple of their former players came back and completed their studies for a degree (Carlton Fay, Matt Shaw..)
..but it was definitely a close call - but guys like Matt Shaw were at SIU for FIVE YEARS!!!
Why after five years of being an undergrad - does he still have to come back to complete his degree?
but that article that I linked also says this...
"Most SIU basketball fans were ecstatic this year when a late-season hot
streak allowed the Salukis to avoid the dreaded Thursday night play-in
game at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament."
there you go -- SIU fans get ecstatic with a 6th place finish, 14-19...and Hinson gets a raise...
Here are the most recent academic (APR) numbers for the MVC
UNI 995
Evansville 979
Bradley 975
Loyola 975
InSU 971
Wichita 961
Drake 953
ISU 952
Missouri State 950
SIU 919
Next year the cutoff for penalties goes up to 930 so SIU was lucky...
National average all sports is 976... for men's basketball it is 957
Five SWAC football teams have a post-season ban - FAMU, Alabama State, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Mississippi Valley State, and Prairie View A&M
-
SEVEN different members of the BU basketball team receive Missouri Valley Conference academic awards & honors....
this is the most of any team in the Valley....
