  • Creighton beats Valpo in Hawaii

In a game that didn't start until nearly midnight, Creighton led nearly the entire way and
    comfortably beat Valparaiso 68-43.
Nate Funk had a good game, shaking off his shooting woes.

Funk had only two in the first half against Valparaiso's starters, but ended the game with 22 getting almost all of his scoring in the final 10 minutes when Creighton was already up 20 and Valpo had their deep subs in.
Nate was still playing and scoring right up to the 2 minute mark when he finally left the game for good with Creighton ahead 66-43.
Anthony Tolliver had 11 points, 6 rebs.
Josh Dotzler did play and in 22 minutes had 4 points and one assist, thus negating any talk about a redshirt year.
However, in a collision, Dotzler severely hurt both hands and dislocated fingers on BOTH hands in the incident, and is not likely to play for a few games.
Ty Morrison, battling back from illness, had no points, no rebounds in 11 minutes of deep bench time in the blowout.
No Valpo player had more than 8 points.

One other fact of note, Nate Funk passed Bob Gibson (of St. Louis Cardinals baseball fame) on the all time Creighton scoring list. Nate is now 17th on CU???‚¬?„?s all-time scoring list.

I see from the play by play stats, that Funk was still launching 3-pointers when CU had a 24 point lead with 2 minutes left in the game.
Does anyone else think this was odd?
Is the coach trying to boost his scoring average?
The play by play shows that Funk left the game with about 6 minutes to go and the Bluejays up by 21.
Then he re-enters 45 seconds later, and immediately takes five more shots, four of them 3-pointers before he leaves with 2 minutes to go.
It is obvious that Valparaiso made no effort to foul and had their deep subs in just letting the clock run to get the game over, and yet Funk is firing up three's like his life depends on it in a 25 point blowout win.

Very, very odd indeed. If this was in New York, Isiah would have taken the guy down.

        YIKES!

Doesn't sound good. And I thought they had their hands full with Houston before I heard this.... and now they don't have HANDS!

Even with all the garbage time scoring they let Nate Funk do, his average crept up only to 15.0ppg, and he is at 6th in the Valley behind Calvin, Webster, Crouch, Moore, and Ahearn, and slightly ahead of Will Franklin and Anthony Toliver.

Since you didn't see the game and I did, I'll chalk these comments up to ignorance.

CU was up by 21, Funk went out, then Valpo made a run to get it to 13 and then the Jays stretched it back out with Funk's help.

You also need to realize that this team has shot the ball horribly and they need to get the confidence going in the worst way. That second half was clicking like no other game yet this year and was much needed medicine.

No ignorance here, but I am not sure what to chalk it up to,
since you are so very wrong and yet you claimed to have seen the game.

So--- unless the play by play log on your own official Creighton website site is in error,
the 13 point margin you speak of was at 11:26 remaining, and Funk helped stretch the lead back to 21,
and LEFT THE GAME, with a 21 point lead at 6:03 remaining.

Then at 5:16, just 47 seconds later, Funk re-entered the game, and within the next 2:52,
Nate launched SEVERAL MORE shots in rapid succession, mostly 3-pointers while all the time the Creighton lead was
never less than 18, and was 24 points aheadwhen Nate launched his final two shots.

So tell me when in the last 6 minutes Valpo was within 13?
It didn't happen, but this is the time period I have to question why your coach has his starters in. And you wonder why guys like Dotzler getting injured causes some concern?
Remember, Dotzler being rushed back last year and forced to play with a torn ligament was a bad move and has set the kid back an entire year, and possibly permanently.

So the time Valpo got within 13 was at 11:26, and the time that I am shocked by is when Dana Altman put Nate back in with only 5 minutes to go and let him bomb away repeatedly from 3-point range, over the final 5 minutes, even though the lead only once dropped below 20 (to 18 ) and the lead was as much as 24 when Nate was still bombing away!

Here, let me walk you through this one example.

At 3:36, Anthony Tolliver rebounds a Valpo miss and calls time out. Funk had just launched 3 long ones at 4:47 and 4:11.
Altman pretty much coincedes he is going to win and takes Tolliver out and now has Funk in there with Manny Gakou, Brice Nengsu, et al.
Then they inbound the ball and about 10 seconds into the possession, Funk nails another 3-pointer.

              But he still wasn't done.
He even launched another before being removed at 2:11.

Here is the official play by play log--
see if you can deny the accuracy of my time line.

Yeah, I see that. Oh well, gimme a break, it was 1:30 in the morning. Fact remains, Funk was 3-26 from 3 since the Nebraska game with about 3 of those being guarded so I stand by the fact that he needed to keep playing and shooting. If you had Crouch or Ruffin shooting 11% over the last month from 3, would you want them in the game when they're starting to feel it?

PS - Assistant coach Fish was just on local radio and said the Houston players were taunting CU after the game saying CU and the Valley sucks, blah, blah, blah. Gonna kick ass, blah blah, blah.

U of H is 6-3 this year with huge wins over Monmouth, Prairie View and Grambling State and a nice 18 point lose to VCU.

Ya they seem to have plenty of room to taunt, but it sounds like something Penders would condone, he was one of the loudest whiners about the MVC last season.

LJ and BUB, I think there are two sides.

First, maybe Nate is still rusty from the long layoff and needs some work so he got left in during garbage time to get some more shots. I don't have a problem with it.

Plus, I try not to coach the other guys' team, since figuring out our own coach is sometimes hard.

But this is a tourney, and you want your players fresh and uninjured, so there probably was a distinct reason Funk was in there with a 20+ point lead...I'm just not sure I can say.
All I can say is that at this point I would accept that Dana Altman has earned a bye on this one. I won't pick any argument with what he does, since he is where I want our coach to be in several years.
Good luck to the Jays in Hawaii, and I especuially want to see you guys nail Tom Penders' butt. Note some of the discussions we have had about him and his railings against Bradley and the MVC.

FWIW, Funk played 30 minutes, yes, the most on the team but Houston won by 18 and was ahead in the 20's late. Yet, they had one guy play 40 minutes and two others play almost 40 minutes.

In the grand scheme of things, CU got much more rest than UH.

We all want Creighton to pound the Cougars. Win one for the MVC!
We hope you are having a great time out there!

                          Go Creighton!
                          Go Wichita!
                          Go Drake!

LJ - I want CU to start rolling as well. And if Funk is in a funk and needs to bomb away against some 2nd-3rd stringers to get it going again for him - then I say play him.
