  • Possible rule changes for next year

The NCAA is considering a number of rule changes for next year that they think might speed up games and increase scoring. Scoring was up early in the season, but then each month dropped lower, mainly to the officiating slowly returning to the way it was called last year.

Couple good possible changes and a couple bad. Lets start with the bad. 1.) Lowering the shot clock to 24 or 30 seconds. IMO Don't want the game to look like the NBA.
2.) Widening the lane. Reason see #1
Changes I would like. 1.) Less time outs allowed. Game is to slow now as an ex official I hated time outs especially late in the game.
2.) I hope if any rule is changed it's not allowing a made basket when a charging foul is called on the shooter. Makes that call so much easier.
One rule that needs to be changed and I didn't see anything about it. Please take the 10 sec. responsibility away from the 35 second timer and put the responsibility back on the trail official. When the trail official has back court pressure he doesn't have the time to keep peeking at the 35 sec. clock and watch for muggings. This situation happened early in the Title game last Monday when UConn was pressing with heavy pressure and the announcers said the 35 sec clock was down to 24 when UK got the ball across half court. This also makes it very important as to when the clock operator starts the 35 sec clock. All I'm saying is let the trail official use the visible count.

They should make some sort of unique sound occur at 25 sec on the shot clock. That way the official doesn't have to look. Only issue is it would have to be loud enough to hear over every crowd.

now that gets to be a little too much...
should they also warn a player with flashing lights when he has 4 fouls, or have a short beep to warn players when they've been in the lane 2.5 seconds, or a little buzzer when closely guarded count gets to 4 seconds?

There's far too many signs, signals, and buzzers already - how about the players simply learn the rules and know them so they can't use the Chris Webber-excuse "but I didn't know..."

He wasn't saying it as a benefit to the players, but so that the officials can watch for fouls and not have to check the clock for a 10 second violation in the backcourt.

A buzzer for ten second violation similar to the buzzer for shot cloc violation makes sense to me if you are going to make the rule go off of the shot clock instead of an officials handcount.
          Gotta stop feeding the trolls.

One thing is, officials could care less when a player has 4 fouls. Also don't need a buzzer for a lane violation or closely guarded count because the official has the count. The problem is they have taken the visible count away from the officials in college on the backcourt 10 sec call and now use the shot clock. When there is pressure in the backcourt it's really tough to watch the defenders and look up at the shot clock at the same time. IMO they need to go back to the visible count. One possible other problem is that the shot clock operator has to start the clock at the appropriate time.

The shot clock does have a loud buzzer sound that they could use but than they'd have to educate the operator and he'd be making the call as to whether the ball was still in the back court. Not exactly the situation you'd want having a shot clock operator making a call.
