  • Transfer rates

Saying it happens everywhere is a lame excuse...and blaming it on the coaching change is phony since MOST of GF's transfers out were his own recruits.

Clearly we have seen a tremendous rise in transfers and roster changeover here and at ISU - way out of proportion to what's being seen nationally
In the 10 years leading up to the coaching change at BU the rate was 1 or 2 a year....about on par with what was happening nationally

The numbers for Division I basketball have been widely stated and pretty well studied...

-About 40% of all D-I basketball players transfer at least once before they finish their college career.

-that translates to about 10% of all D-I players transfer yearly... about 10%

When Fred Hoiberg enrolled at Iowa State to begin his college basketball career in the fall of 1991, he knew he'd have to wait his turn. I was a role player my first two years, said Hoiberg, now the Cyclones' coach. Once Justus Thigpen, Ron Bayless...

The NCAA is examining transfer rules after a spate of high-profile cases that has critics saying too much power is in the hands of athletic directors and coaches.

but if counting committed or rostered players....
In the two years since spring of 2012 - 13 ISU players have left & transferred (see elsewhere...)
(and if each program has 13 scholarships - the average transfer rate of ~10% is 1.3 players per year - 2.6 per 2-years) thus ISU's rate under Muller is five times the average.

In the 3 years since spring of 2011 - Bradley has had eight - ~2-3 times the average....
(Davis, Maniscalco, Stewart, Hodges, Shayok, Crawford, Swopshire, Zecevic - plus debatable if you want to count Abell, Tucker, but won't count Gavin)

Make what you want of it but if a couple of CIT wins is all we have to show for all this change - then we got robbed...

Thank you - glad you asked....and not that I care where a private University spends it's money - but it is worth noting....

someone's been robbed of approx a $7 mil outlay over the past 3 years (in buyouts, searches, new hires plus other people's salaries that necessarily had to go up, and extra costs not the least of which is a needless lawsuit that BU & their coach have lost but are still fighting) with the promise we'd be better right away - and this doesn't include the enormous lost revenue in the millions from declining attendance & plummeting numbers in the donor groups - plus the loss of the $3 mil Puterbaugh gift & others.. All told - prob. $12-15 mil + and three Thursday nites to show for it...
Every other sports as well is slumping and the last 3-4 years are a legacy that will be hard to overcome - I never thought there'd be legit talk in my lifetime of Bradley going DII

I know it's old news but....
from the end of the Molinari era 'til 2011 people openly and regularly questioned and criticized every aspect of Bradley basketball...
there was a flourishing cottage industry of message board posters and newspaper columnists...constant harsh daily criticism...

EVERY single day they questioned every hire, and why we didn't hire their favorites, they questioned every aspect of building an on campus arena, claimed it was too small, knocked too many houses down, the people at BU were not open & honest about their plans, people daily criticized Mo's style of play, JL's style of play, the players he recruited, claims of improprieties, attacks on the head coach, the assistants, the players, even unfounded and unsupported allegations of drug use and lawbreaking...demanding firings and calling the program "renegade"...

I reiterate - NOTHING was immune to criticism nor too minor - even the way the coach combed his hair, crossed his arms,
how he talked to the press or revealed his potential starting lineup, whether he recruited jucos or took transfers, alllowed kids to have summer jobs, whether he texted players about their potential playing time or took a vacation to a sunny area, or even who he talked to during time outs... whether you saw it or not - trust me there were irate fans and PJS columnists who were all sure they knew better & ripping endlessly on every one of these issues and many, many more.

BUT -- all the while BU enjoyed record-breaking success, record revenues, sellouts, and high attendances, 20-win seasons, wins over ranked teams, A sweet Sixteen, NCAA wins, NIT wins, the development from zero to nearly 80 members - of the BSS and the $millions that brought in, historic fund-raising that helped build multiple new buildings - Markin Center, Puterbaugh, Renaissance, Alumni Center, etc...

so if all was so good yet we saw daily bellyaching and criticism - then why in such a down-cycle of losing and bad attendance -everything is rosy and people don't want to allow any fair criticism?
sorry - I think what's good for the goose....you know...

        Hmmm...Where to start.

The cottage industry of criticizing coaches as you speak of started most likely the minute that the NCAA began investigating Versace. Albeck was horrid when he had to play with his own recruits, and blew a 16 point second half lead to auburn, which I assume would draw criticism. They went on the last 8 years under MO, and in fact Dave Snell after Mo's hire said "Well if you want to win games 45-43...."

So the fact that those criticisms extended to Les and now Geno are not surprising.

The next part is correct, the record breaking things that happened under Mo were largely forgotten. I have a lot of respect for you bringing them up. The home court we had during that time was spectacular.

Ultimately, the following is true. The University needs more out of the mens basketball program. It really hasnt had the necessary success in the last 15 years. I don't think many would disagree.

Its my hope Geno gets it done. I can understand why supporters of Coach Les would be none to happy with the results, just as I was none too happy when BU took the step back from Coach Mo to Coach Les. Time will tell.

University is not going broke by any stretch, but deficit spending, if thats whats happening, is not smart.

          but that's just it -
there's very little criticism of all that's gone wrong recently - If I post something I get slammed for saying it...and anyone else gets shouted down...
while the media drips with glowing praise even during record losing seasons, and embarrassingly bad home losses - and keeps calling everything good, top recruiting classes, way better talent, deeper, "light years better", etc...
The media is in the tank and trying to shore up mediocrity and call it good to help out the agenda.
Now after years of promising better right away - we're being told to be patient for several more years because it's hard.
OK - I will be somewhat patient - I will keep re-upping my season tickets - but how many others are not.....doesn't anyone care that were are dangerously close to dropping under 50% of what we drew for attendance only a couple years ago-- !!

Once a Brave always a Brave? I'm still a fan. However I am in southern CA and don't have to spring for season tickets. I only managed six games a year for the last two or three years.

Admittedly certain media and writers have been very lenient in their handling of Bradley men's basketball team. It has been showing a certain degree of change late this year.

by their own admission - their own words...the media began the drumbeat to engineer the very changes that put us where we currently are...
now they have lost their drum.

It all may be moot - because we are one tiny but almost inevitable step away from where we will be completely unable to pay a head coach $700K,
or even a baseball coach $120K ...or play in a big arena where we have to pay tens of thousands of $$ to rent it...
see the discussion on "the nuclear option"...
