This chart shows the numbers of athletes involved in men's and women's basketball, and football in high school, college (NCAA divisions), and the pros, and the relative statistics showing what percentages of kids make it to each level-

Only 0.03% of high school basketball players make it to the pros (less than 1 out of 3000).

a fair number of high school kids play sports for colleges that are not NCAA - and thus may be missed by those statistics...

Of the kids who played ball with my kids - many went to smaller colleges, NAIA, NCCAA, jucos.. so they still got to play sports in college but wouldn't have been counted by NCAA

That is not surprising. It is difficult for one to make it to be a professional athlete. You have to have the gift, have good health, work hard, and have some luck to make a living as a pro. I have been told that your son or daughter has a much greater chance of being a neurosurgeon than playing professional tennis or golf. The money spent on private lessons and clinics could be better spent on tutoring in many cases.
