  • Big Ten Player of the Year

The 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year is Nick Stauskas of Michigan.
Stauskas, the conference’s fourth-leading scorer at 17.4 points per game, was named as the Big Ten’s top player during Monday’s live announcement broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

It's the second year in a row the award went to Michigan player (Trey Burke last year), and both Burke and Stauskas were high schoolers that were not among the top recruits in their class. Stauskas was rated between 70-100 nationally by the recruiting services in 2012, and Burke was rated even lower, between 100-150 in 2011.

This shows John Beilein knows what he is doing with recruiting, coaching, and developing talent. Michigan ran away with the Big Ten title, finishing 3 full games ahead of 2nd place Michigan State and Wisconsin, despite not getting recruits rated as highly as most other Big Ten schools, and without perhaps his best player, Mitch McGary, who played in only 8 games and missed the entire Big Ten season with injury.

That story with Trey Burke is bizarre... but obviously he shows how much a good PG can do for a team - which I hope translates into some success for us with Tramique Sutherland!

Burke was widely known as a top PG prospect as early as his sophomore year in high school
He was offered then decided on Michigan even before his JUNIOR year in high school.
The fact that he was already locked up and was not a subject of recruiting articles his final couple years likely led to dropping in the rankings.
