As has been discussed before- this is all about football. In fact, if it doesn't happen, it will be because they didn't want their basketball program to take a step down. But the Sun Belt plays in Division I FBS division (Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A or University Division), while the Missouri Valley Football Conference is FCS division (Football Championship Division, formerly Division I-AA or College Division), which is a lower level that does not play in the Bowls, and instead has a postseason championship playoff system. The 30+ FBS Bowls obviously generate far more money, and thus the FBS schools share in a much larger pot of money than the FCS schools do. FCS schools are not eligible to play in the Bowls. It's worth a shot. Big money gained and LOST in the FBS, much smaller potatoes in basketball.
The Shock can't be hanging on too much longer as another conference is sure to reach out to them irrespective of distance. I still think they should head to the B12, with no revenue split for football in the conference.Comment

then once football is factored out -
#2 is the size of the fan following and the ability to pack the arena
#3 is winning tradition in basketball
right now we do not have #1 and we have spent 3-4 years positioning ourselves extremely poorly for #2 & #3Comment

We just made the stadium upgrades to meet the FBS football standards for stadium size, but I have been told that the Sun Belt speculation is not as solid as some would have you believe.Comment

the talk of Missouri State possibly leaving the MVC for the Sun Belt is still active...
The Sun Belt is going to expand and is reported to have about six schools they are targeting...
they are - in no particular order...
Liberty
James Madison
Chattanooga
Jacksonville State
Missouri State
Sam Houston State
and reportedly they will receive official invitations one by one until the conference is satisfied with the responses they get.

but it appears James Madison is out of consideration by the Sun Belt - according to the Commissioner - LINK
then the recent news on boosting the Missouri State AD's pay and giving him an extension may be a signal,
the fact that some sports at Missouri State already compete in the SUN BELT, and in a recent radio interview the Missouri State president danced around any talk of a decision being made but declined to state that they are staying in the MVC.Comment
