  • Why we lost

I know it's yet another thread but it is an important topic and deserves discussion. I am only griping because I care and I want to see some good basketball from my favorite team.
I'll air my gripes then move on - it's largely what I have been saying for 3 years but I guess I am a bit bolder now since finally everyone else seems to see it.

I have now watched the entire game two times (including replay)...
    FWIW here's my take....

First - Kirk Wessler is wrong - we had enough talent to win and we had the senior leadership of Walt Lemon & Tyshon Pickett - who did everything to carry this team and to help get everyone else involved. But two guys can't do it.
The offense is absolutely predictable and we don't make enough changes when it is not working!
There is a lot of standing around, ineffective screens, players stepping out of bounds, and ill advised shots - I love TP but he's a 26% 3-pt shooter - so get him the heck in under the hoop where he does his best.
Speaking of under the hoop - we never develop any big guys - Xzavier is no better than he was last August on the Bahamas trip.
Pross played 19 minutes & had zero pts & 2 rebs.

We have not recruited in the three most basic areas of college basketball. - PG play, post play, outside shooting...
We keep getting kids who cannot score, single digit scorers and guards who aren't enough of a threat on offense.

BUT - with Walt & Ty having great games - all we needed were a few other guys capable of mediocre efforts and it didn't happen.

Second-we always seem to let guys go for career shooting nights & look like stars against us. Do we need to scout and prepare better?

As was said elsewhere ..in 3 years we haven't beaten anyone we weren't supposed to.
If you have good scouting & good game preparation then once in a while you can surprise a good team and get an upset. But we never do - it happens a lot the other way around, like tonight, IUPUI, Pacific, Drake, UW-M....etc...

Third - I have said all season long - we don't seem to have set plays on our inbounds plays that work let alone have plans to cover the other guys on their inbounds plays.

My last comment then I will turn my attention to watching Tramique play...
It all starts by playing three key elements of the game well...Point guard play, low post play, outside shooting.
These are the three areas we have been pointing out the weakness for 3 years - not enough of our players play these basics well.

I thought TP played reaslly good for most of the night??¦.Walt was just ok IMO??¦..6 turnovers with a dribble off the foot late in the game really hurt..

They both broke down defensively on that last play??¦.LU should never have gotten the ball up the floor that easily??¦.

Listen... Loyola was better than us. Period. They deserved that shot going in.
