  • MVC Larry Bird Trophy

The Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year is awarded the Larry Bird Trophy. This year's preseason Player of the Year was Wichita State's Cleanthony Early. However, his numbers don't stand out as much as some might have expected. He is tied for 6th among scorers in MVC games, and many feel he is not the most valuable player on his own team. But he does play for the #1 team in the MVC, and has gotten all the hype since the preseason.
Who is deserving of the Larry Bird Trophy?

Here is the latest release from the MVC with an update on the top Larry
Bird Trophy candidates from each MVC school and their stats.-

I am not sure why Justin Gant's name is on this list. He's a nice player, but IMO, he won't get any votes for POY, and Pickett or Mockevicius are more deserving. But other than him, I do feel most of the names that will make up the 1st and 2nd team All-MVC, and the Honorable Mention list are there.

    My guesses-
1st team- Early, Van Vleet, Odum, Tuttle, and Lemon
2nd team- Jackson, Balentine, Gulley, Beane, and Baker
Honorable Mention- Pickett, Carter, Thomas, Mockevicius, and Knight (or maybe Doyle)

The POY will come obviously from the 1st Team All Valley candidates, and there are only 3 or 4 worth mentioning..
FVV, Early, Walt, maybe Balentine, and Odum...but Walt isn't in a winning team & Balentine's team is even worse - so cross them off - and so it comes down to Van Vleet vs. Early...

Early is the better scorer and the right now the favorite - but don't count out Van Vleet - lots of people who are the voters appreciate how valuable the guy is even without scoring.

If I recall - half the votes for the all league & POY come from full time basketball people (coach & athletic dept./SID) and the other half from media (radio announcer & beat writer).

Still don't understand why Gulley isn't in the mix?

      4th in scoring
2nd in overall Rebounds among the group
      1st in offensive rebounds
top half of the valley finish.

No ISU Redbirds in the top three teams? Two Salukis...? I don't get it.

Gulley is in the running since nobody has submitted their ballots yet..........
I picked him on the 1st Team...

but Jarmar has come on strong lately - his early season numbers were not nearly as good - and unfortunately some of the people doing the voting may not know how good his numbers lately have been.
