  • Injury - Omari Grier

it was stated that Omari Grier has a torn labrum of his hip and had a "cortisone injection" before the last game, and will require surgery after the season is over.
The injury occurred and Omari has been playing with the torn labrum since "the start of the season"..

This is generally a very stubborn and frustrating injury that involves a tear in the socket & cartilage of the hip joint, possibly also with some torn or poorly healing muscles in and around the hip as well.
It can possibly be repaired using arthroscopic surgery, although some need open surgery...
...and often takes quite a while to rehab from the surgery - sometimes 6 months or more.

Most experience as expected is in people who do NOT put Division I-caliber stress & strain on their hips - so recovery time to be able to play at the same strenuous level as before in top athletes might even be longer.

ps - why do we publicize our injuries and who has them - pro teams don't because it instantly gives opponents an advantage

Shouldn??™t we just shut him down now and get him ready for next season? At this point I??™d prefer to throw almost anyone else out there to get game time experience. I??™m thinking I would give Swoopshire the first crack.

Well, let's wait until after the Wichita game in a few days...we need everybody for that one in our upset victory.

This injury may explain his poor shooting percentage this season. Because he has already played with this injury throughout this season, I am assuming that someone has decided for him not to redshirt and deal with any corrective surgery after the season.

Redshirting was not an option, since he already sat out a whole year after the transfer. D1 players get only 5 calendar years to complete their 4 years of play. That means they can take only 1 redshirt year or they will lose the next one altogether. There are rare exceptions like when Will Egolf and Sam Singh were granted a 6th year, but the NCAA usually only grants waivers when a player loses 2 years to injuries, not because one of the years was due to a transfer.

So the medical staff must have concluded he can't do any more harm by playing on it and felt he could wait until the season is over for the surgery.

Quite an upset victory! It would be great if they could pull if off, though.
