I do not make flimsy excuses, don't look to blame the people under me or "over me", don't look to heap the blame on people who used to be here or who were around years or decades ago, and don't stand and pretend what's really, really bad actually isn't so bad and that the complainers are the ones to be blamed for noticing how bad things are or for whining and trying to make me fail....
nope - takes a lot to own up to 100% of the responsibility and fix what needs to be fixed - and try to make everyone I deal with satisfied.....and not jam something inferior down the throats of everyone who cares to ask....

And you would rather be woken up after championships? after NCAA appearances?
Maybe you would like to catch a couple meets this fall and watch the teams run. The women might advance past the NCAA Regionals and go to Nationals.
Or would you rather I wake you up in the middle of February during another miserable basketball season and tell you how the x-country team did (and women possibly advancing to Nationals).
Sometimes it isn't only just about the destination... but also the journey getting there.

This has got to be the most fickle groups of fans I've ever seen. Before the Indiana State, almost everyone was picking us to win, saying we're playing as good as anyone in the Valley and feeling like he had a good chance at 3rd. Then we lose, and every starts acting like the sky is falling. This isn't the first time it's happened this year. Early on, people were liked the team they saw, now they hate it.
Guess what? This is the same team that started the year. Right now, we pretty much go as Walt goes, and when he has a bad game (which he did against ISU blue. Most of his points were in garbage time), we're not going to look as good. We didn't look very good on Wednesday, but we still only lost by 6 to the second best team in the Valley. I'd argue they have the best PG and SF (Odum and Arop) in the conference. Am I happy with the loss? No. As I stated in the game thread, it was a horribly ugly game, and hard to watch. I'm just being realistic and saying at the start of Valley season, this would've been a game most people had marked as a loss. I still think we can win tomorrow, and maybe even down in Carbondale (though that will be tougher, with how hot the Salukis have been lately). I'm not giving up on this team.

I like to hear about any team getting better. We have cited and congratulated the cross country teams and Coach Burns here multiple times before.
But there has been way too little of that kind of success, and that is the complaint I hear the most from beleaguered Bradley fans and supporters.
There have been fans' posts about other teams showing nice improvements in the past like when the more visible programs like the baseball team showed slight improvement several years in a row, but then fell back to one of the worst seasons any team has ever had in the MVC.
And when the women's basketball team had 3 winning seasons out of 4 and post season appearances for the first time, but that has taken a huge step back and they are now in last place.
And softball that looked to be a team on the rise, but then they have now returned to the bottom end of the conference.
And volleyball, despite multiple coaching changes, and great kids that give it their all, they have been bottom dwellers in the MVC for years before finally making it up to 6th place, in large part because of Creighton leaving and weakening the conference.
Overall, we have been well short of the promises of Dr. Cross when he said he expects to see every team compete for championships every year.
Or this statement clipped from his Bradley bio-
Under his leadership, Bradley Athletics strives to provide every student-athlete the opportunity for both a distinctive education and a championship experience...

The Peoria Journal Star published this letter from a Bradley fan-
Forum: Clock is ticking on Bradley basketball program
The fan's opinion is not what I find strange about this, since we know thousands of previously loyal Bradley fans and ticket buyers feel the same way. What is strange is that the sycophants that run the PJS finally got the nerve to publish such a letter, when they continue to refuse refused to recognize any of the problems that are so obvious with the BU athletic department.

I've worked directly and indirectly with the university and the athletic department in recent years and I can tell you that without a doubt, having successful athletic programs are a "nice to have", not a "must have" with the higher-ups. This affects many aspects of the athletic dept. obviously from the budgets to the staffing to the community and student engagement. They are trying hard and have dedicated people at the ground level that really want to be part of the solution, but without the commitment and vision from the top they can only do so much.

whether they succeed or not is a different discussion..but they definitely do place an extremely high priority on it - as do most other schools - so much so that it's a constant topic of dissatisfaction among other university employees.

+1 Forty Two....
I'm still trying to find common ground with T.....
Now, it was easier in the past for BU Admin to go all in with it's MBB program vs other schools in the MVC and nationally...
Now, it is a bit (much) tougher for BU to compete with budget busting sports programs, Title IX, TV revenue and Tournament participation revenue so biased to what used to be called BCS Conferences...
Two and out players, transfers at the drop of a hat, and schools more than willing to sell their academic reputation and ethics to the devil also conspire to keep schools like BU from getting and keeping top talent..
Can't say I blame top BU Admin, it is a University and not a Sports Minor League... Do BU students today really choose to attend BU for its Intercollegiate Sports Program's successes?
Do big time donors to the academic side of BU only donate if BU's Intercollegiate Sports Programs are successful?
Can't say I am happy with this situation and BU Admins apparent decision to be half pregnant with the BU MBB program, but I can certainly understand it.
This may be a case where longing for the old days, may actually be true.
But, you never know. Past performance is not a guarantee of future success.
Like lightening in a bottle in 2004-5, if it happens again, people will jump on bandwagon again.
I also have a feeling GF has been let down by his BU team's performance this season and their poor response to his coaching.
He, and a lot of other people, obviously saw more in these kids than they have given the team, for whatever reason, this season.BUilding for the Future

Having spoken personally to Dr. Cross and Pres. Glasser about this topic, I have to disagree with what FortyTwo said. I believe this administration is dedicated to fielding championship caliber teams in every sport. They have told us this
Just read Dr. Cross' bio on the BU website-
Under his leadership, Bradley Athletics strives to provide every student-athlete the opportunity for both a distinctive education and a championship experience, while embracing five core values: accountability, courage, diligence, integrity and respect.
Read his words when he was hired-
"Bradley's history of athletic success, academic excellence and President Glasser's leadership make this a unique opportunity. I look forward to partnering with President Glasser, the coaching staff, student-athletes, faculty, staff, alumni and the entire Peoria community to make Bradley's athletic program one of national distinction."
He reiterates it again in this article from the Bradley Hilltopics-
"The mission is very straightforward: Provide every student-athlete the opportunity for both a distinctive education and a championship experience.”
And he has stated it even more specifically and clearly in Chat sessions he has done.
President Glasser has made many similar statements publicly and privately, and she has clearly been more personally involved and supportive of Bradley's sports programs than any previous administrator.
Further evidence the administration places an extremely high priority on a successful basketball program-
Dr. Cross is highly paid. Our head basketball coach gets paid more than anyone in the MVC except Gregg Marshall. Our President attends nearly every game, dresses and cheers with the students, travels on many road trips, and is involved almost daily in promoting the basketball program, and raising student interest.
There is no doubting that the BU administration wants to win and be successful, I just question that it is capable of happening. So far there is no evidence that it can.
Now if FortyTwo was referring to the members of the Board of Trustees, who are not administrators, then I might agree. They are mostly successful businessmen and women, and other prominent people with Bradley or community connections who have limited contact with the University and even less with the athletic programs. They only meet a few times a year with a lot of important stuff on their agendas, and athletics isn't high on their priority list. I believe most of them couldn't tell you who our players are or even who our coach is, or what the team's win-loss record is. But they do see the financial numbers, and the revenues for the athletic department are plummeting faster and farther than they ever have in Bradley's history, along with the attendance. Maybe that will matter to the BOT.

My commentary was meant to say that the higher ups are committed to winning as long as that winning comes within the framework of everyone doing things their way. Kind of the old saying "I'd rather lose my way than win your way". This isn't shocking or all that uncommon, but it does in my mind limit their commitment to being successful.
