  • I am glad you set me up so nicely to answer that question - as I consider Ken a good friend and am happy to tout his successes...

It is difficult to list all the accomplishments in his 4 plus years at FGCU but here's a little snippet...

His short stay thus far at FGCU has just coincidentally paralleled a truly remarkable degree of success in 8 to 10 different sports hasn't it......
In addition to dozens of conference championships in numerous different sports over the past 5 years - they also are coming off a year in which FGCU won ALL THREE of their conference's ALL-SPORTS trophies (Men's, Women's, Combined) and...and have sent multiple teams (four to six) to the NCAA National Tournament in every single season that they have been eligible to do so since turning D-I ..and
Ken Kavanagh is the current reigning 2013 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Athletics Director of the Year as voted by his peers...

So as strange as it sounds, yes, I do believe he has a little bit to do with the success of his programs and of his staff

    • Paul Lusk is just 3 years into the rebuild of Missouri State - he is rewarded with a nice salary boost & contract extension
He's still working for well less than half of what some MVC coaches are being paid

Utah's head coach Larry Krystkowiak gets a nice upgrade inhis contract as well after just three years on the job of rebuilding

        • he'd rightfully get the blame if they tanked...so give him some credit if they succeed

          • It is interesting that Ken Kavanagh's 2 coaching hires have been extremely successful, and they were made entire by himself.

No search committees (he must have learned that from experience), no hiring Executive Search Firms then running out of candidates and hiring someone other than the candidates they provided, no rejections by multiple candidates, and no midnight phone calls from University Presidents telling him who to hire.

Somehow he made 2 tremendous hires, one that turned a Division I newby that had always been a bottom dweller into a conference champion and a Sweet 16 team, and another one where he took a top assistant from one of the best programs in the country and they won 22 games again, and went to the postseason (NIT). If he isn't "developing coaches", he is certainly doing things right, making the right selections, providing the environment for successful recruiting and winning, and putting his coaches in a position to be highly successful.

Ken has made good choices in his last two hires for sure and he should get credit for it??¦??¦.both guys were good coaches though before he hired them therefore I think saying he developed a guy with 25 years experience and successful past is a stretch??¦

Give credit to Ken for the hire and give credit for the coaching to Dooley

                • Ohio hires Saul Phillips - ending speculation about Dustin Ford & Geno

Saul Phillips was the North Dakota State head coach - so might Lawrence Alexander be interested in transferring?

their final deal is $550,000 per year to land Saul Phillips

btw - Ohio had a 4-Star recruit coming in and he has asked for his release but has not yet received it
