  • Sam Maniscalco

People in Chicago are still talking about Sam's unbelieveable performance Saturday night in St. Patrick's win over the #2 team in the state, St, Joseph's, 57-54. Sam scored 30 points and completely outplayed the 2nd and 3rd rated players in the state of Illinois Demetry McCamey (signed to Illinois) and Evan Turner (signed to Ohio State).

Sam has lead his team in scoring in every one of their 7 games. He is averaging 24.4 points per game.

    St. Patrick's is now 6-1.
ChicagoHoops.com now rates St, Patrick's as tied for 10th in the state of Illinois--

The Sun Times leaves them out of the Top 25--

Bob Sakamoto of the Chicago Tribune doesn't rate St. Pat's yet, but he releases his Top 20 on Thurdays, so this is from last Thursday, 12/14--

St. Patrick's plays again tomorrow (Tuesday) at St. Laurence High School.

Thanks for the links. It sounds like Sam might be able to step right in and take over one of the point guard spots left open by Will and JJ. Sam has to like the way the offense looks this year.

Isn't he goign to be the 6th guard on our team?

        Ruff
        DeAaron
        Fears
        Crouch
        Warren

He could even be the 7th, provided Brown actually plays?

As long as those guys are all healthy, I can't see a lot of ways for Sam Maniscalco to get SIGNFICANT minutes... so if that's the case then a redshirt doesn't seem like a bad idea, if he's willing to do it.

Flipper, you may be too young to remember Jim Les when he played. Sam can do for a team what Jim Les did for that 1985-86 team. Maybe not right away, but he is such a smart player, makes every teammate better, and can shoot lights out or drive and score or pass. And he is good enough defende to play as a freshman. I haven't seen him, but I have communicated with a couple people who are impressed with him.
He will be an adequate replacement for Will Franklin next year, and will take over the primary PG duties when DR is gone.

ChicagoHoops.com has just updated their rankings for the class of 2007. These guys have seen Sam play as well as all the kids in the rankings, while many people doing rankings have never seen him.

They just moved him up to the #10 player in Illinois. A year ago he was rated down around #30.

Note that he is ahead of Illinois recruits Bill Cole and Mike Tisdale as well as some other pretty good players.

I think Williams can play the 3 with his leaping ability.

pob i saw DW alot in HS and I think you are right. DW will more than likely play the 3 with maybe some 2. His ball handling would have had to improve to play much 2. Therefore I think 3 is where he gets his minutes.

Keep in mind, most of the time, 4 of those guards will be playing at the same time. The 4 guard offense isn't going away, and I don't think I want it to.

I think there is playing time to be had next year for Sam if he is good enough. It looks like the post area will be the weak point next year unless some of the new big guys can play right away or some jucos come in and fill the void. So I see a guard dominated team again (basically what BB just mentioned).

I'd like to see Sam play in his first year for an easier transition for when BU loses Ruffin. Plus, I like having at least two point guard type players on the floor. It really seems to have made the offense move the ball better and get up the floor faster.

Thanks for making my point. I hope Sam is SOOOO good a r/s isn't even considered but when was the last time a freshamn was THAT good? Ray Brown was quite hyped.....

I brought up the r/s question more as a conversation starter to see what people thought. Most of your good programs have a great r/s "policy" in place. Its a great way to build strength and experience into your program.

Again, I hope Sam is so good it isn't a consideration but if there ever has been a time when we were heavy at a position and could "afford" to look at it....

I agree that it would be nice to be able to redshirt more players in the future like Creighton and SIU. However, I think that is more beneficial to big men than point guards. I'm sure there is one out there, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a point guard that redshirted.

What a luxury it would be to give Anthony Thompson or Will Egolf a year to hit the weights before playing in the post.

Thompson seems like a good choice....

Would you? If I had this ability, I would want to play! If not at Bradley, somewhere!
Let us get off the RED SHIRT, BS. The kids a player, NOT a project.
                              Redshirt, Anthony Thompson, not Sam
