And to think just a few days ago there were people saying they were disappointed BU had offered Matt Salley a scholarship.
I won't go as far to say I was disappointed we offered him a scholarship, but I will say I was disappointed in his play up to the Wright St game. He had showed that he moves well, had a fundamentally sound shot, and understood the game (better than our starting center). But, he seemed extremely passive, careless with the ball, and somewhat uninterested. That's what drew my ire. Whether it was reading our posts (I doubt it), or the staff motivating him (most likely), Matt has really responded in these last 2 games. I was skeptical about the Wright St game considering how bad they were, but Salley showed just how good he can be against Iowa St. I see that as a great sign as to what he can do for us the rest of the year. If he can be a 8-10 pt, 5-7 rebound guy off the bench, we'll be in great shape. If he's going to give us a double-double off the bench, we may have to reasses our expectations for this team. Congrats to Matt Salley for a well-deserved award!
PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley junior forward Matt Salley (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenburg H.S.), a first-year transfer from Monroe (N.Y.) College, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office this afternoon. Today's announcement came after Salley turned in his best performance as a Brave to date with 17 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's 76-66 win versus Iowa State in the Mediacom Cyclone Capital Classic in Des Moines. Salley turned the game to Bradley's favor in a span of just 1-minute, 15-seconds midway through the first half. With Bradley leading 12-10, Salley recorded two steals and scored seven points to give the Braves a 19-10 lead. Bradley's lead did not dip below five points the rest of the game. Salley made 7-of-10 field goal attempts and all three of his free throw attempts versus the Cyclones. The 6-foot-7 forward also contributed
I noted that Ajay Calvin had the benefit that Drake played two games last week, the interval looked at for the award.
So that probably gave an advantage to Ajay, but can't deny he had a great week.
In the story in the Des Moines Register, they say Josh Young was the Player of the Week in the Valley last week, but that is wrong.
Josh Young was the Newcomer of the Week, Eric Coleman was the POW.
"A Bulldog has earned the award in back-to-back weeks: Freshman guard Josh Young was named MVC player of the week before Calvin."

You'll have to forgive them....there are times where I'm not sure if the Register's sports editors even know that there is a Missouri Valley Conference.
And to think just a few days ago there were people saying they were disappointed BU had offered Matt Salley a scholarship.
I never said that I was disappointed. I was simply stating that he had not really shown any interest in playing. He seemed uninterested and showed harly any emotion. I was just stating that if we go after a juco big man, we need to scout more efficiently. You said yourself that he was the best available at the last minute, well what I was saying is that this year we cannot wait until the last minute, as I know Coach Les and the boys will not. Also. I am very excited that Mr. Salley has come around and totally discredited me and BradleyBrave. Congrats to Matt on his honor and let's get some Valley revenge on Loyola!
I just about started a thread on Matt Salley a couple weeks ago to get the opinion of some of the posters on here. I have a coworker that just kept talking about how good he though Matt Salley was. I didn't see it. I thought he was a servicable role player that would pick up some put back baskets because of the way the offense ran.
Salley and Franklin won the game for BU on Saturday. Salley had two good spurts in the first half that turned a close game into a double digit game. I expect it from Franklin, I didn't expect it from Salley. Hopefully it is a sign of things to come or at least future teams will have to respect BU's inside game a little more.
I'll admit I was also tough on Matt Salley in his play prior to the Wright State games. One of my main beefs with him was that he would not always play his position. He'd take 3-pter shots or jumpers well away from the basket. There were flashes of good play here and there, but it wasn't consistent.
I'm glad he's turned things around, and he's playing very well now. Congratulations, Matt!
