  • Wichita writer slams the MVC

Bob Lutz - one of the Wichita beat writers - throws out the idea that the Wichita State basketball team will go undefeated in league play...
hey - he even throws out the idea, although improbable, that they could go undefeated all season long! (LOL)

He also doesn't have a lot of respect for any other team in the MVC--
"suspect...", "two left feet..", "not good...not good at all..."

"Shockers don??™t shy away from unbeaten discussion

..Wichita State is 12-0 and the Shockers aren??™t trying to hide from being undefeated.

Shockers coach Gregg Marshall talked to his team about being undefeated before Sunday night??™s 77-66 win..
You could never get a pitcher in baseball to talk about a no-hitter while it??™s happening. But when you??™re unbeaten in basketball, there??™s no place to hide.

???Being unbeaten is a big accomplishment,??? Shocker sophomore point guard Fred VanVleet said. ???We??™re the first team here at Wichita State to be unbeaten this far into a season. We went 10-0. Then we got to 11-0. Now it??™s 12-0. We??™re taking it one game at a time.???

... no college basketball team has gone through an entire season undefeated since Indiana in 1976.

But ??¦ have you looked at the teams in the Missouri Valley Conference this season?

It??™s not good. It??™s not good at all.

The rest of the Valley has two left feet while the Shockers are historically good. I have studied the other nine teams in the MVC, looking for one or two that might threaten the Shockers. Let??™s just say I??™m still looking.

My Valley scouting report for Dec. 23 is condensed to this: The Shockers are outstanding. The rest of the league looks suspect. It all adds up to what I believe will be a long unbeaten run..

..As Marshall addressed his team before Sunday night??™s game, he didn??™t shy away from the ???U??? word. He adopted it and gave it a home.

???We??™re going for 12-0, we??™re going for an undefeated season,??? he said. ???It??™s never happened before in Shocker history."

Don't think it would be too far fetched to see them go undefeated in the Valley.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

Most of the national pundits seem to think that the Shockers will be the last team to lose this year.. What I really like about Wichita is just how hard they play. Their best players, Early, Baker, Cotton and Van Fleet, seem to be their hardest workers. Those 4 guys shoot 36% from 3 and shoot 82% from the FT line. They don't have the guy in the middle like Carl Hall was for them last year, which could eventually catch up to them. The 3 potential roadblocks to the perfect regular season, which they are openly talking about, are at Mo State on January 11, at ISU Blue on February 5 and at UNI on February 8. The longer it goes it'll be interesting to see how they handle the pressure of the undefeated season and the press that goes with it. I say good luck to them.

Just to be clear, during his radio show this last week, Coach Marshall BLASTED Bob Lutz regarding that article.

Coach's comments were clearly in reference to an undefeated non-conference season and not going undefeated for the entire season. Gregg was not happy at all with Bob about that "misunderstanding".

Also to be fair, it's likely Bob took his cue from an in game video the marketing department has been doing where they piece together some pregame locker room comments and run them at half time of the games. At the NCC game, one such video, obviously heavily chopped and edited, referenced an undefeated season. Coach probably had or will have in the near future a discussion with Marketing about those videos.

Coach went on to say that the chances of going undefeated for the season were about as good as Bob not writing a bad article the rest of the year....not going to happen.

just hoping it becomes bulletin board material for the other 9 MVC teams!

And to add to what the good Doc said, Lutz is NOT a beat writer. He's a horrible opinion columnist that most Shocker fans can't stand. Unless he's writing about the STL Cardinals, he mostly has no clue of what he speaks, and even then, I'd question how much he really knows about the Cards.

It's shocking that a writer would take creative license to try and prove his point. Still think Wichita has the best chance to be the last of the unbeatens. They will get everyones best shot when the Shockers come to town but they seem to be pretty cool customers. I say embrace the challenge, one game at a time, which sounds like that's what they might be doing. I know I'd like to see an undefeated Shockers team come into Carver to take on BU at the end of February.

Lol probably not worried about bulletin board material. They are already going to get everyone's best shot no matter what. An article won't change anything

And the league as a whole is pretty bad....

Yes, keep in mind that Bob was a big fan of Jose Offerman (Awfulman) and was hoping the Cards would obtain him years ago. That alone should show how much he knows even about baseball (his favorite sport) let alone basketball. I'll give him some rope on this one because of the poorly edited video that left out part of what was said in the locker room by Coach Marshall. He was saying that the goal was to reach Christmas undefeated and when the video was shown, it omitted the "Christmas" which seemed to show that he was saying the Shockers would go undefeated for the season.

Lutz should have verified the statement and certainly should not have indicated that the Shox would go undefeated. Not a bit wise on his behalf.

                      Maybe should have said "should."

                        revisited -
although I think it was a little risky to say it - I have to admit it is now becoming more likely that Wichita will run the table and finish the Valley season undefeated...
I guess I kinda thought some other MVC would put up a little fight...and just maybe Indiana State still can when they host the Shockers.
But the rest of the Valley might not even get a jingle from the CIT

                          Trivia question --

who was the last MVC team to "run the table"? - I saw some discussion elsewhere that said it was the 1978-79 Indiana State team with Larry Bird....

BUT...guess what -- that it NOT TRUE....
I believe - the last team to do it was Bradley 1985-86 - we finished 16-0 in MVC play
We were 32-3 and our only losses were to Claemson in the regular season and to Tulsa & Louisville in the post-season

The 2003-04 SIU Salukis almost did it...they were 17-0 when they faced UNI in their final regular season game - but lost to finish the Valley season 17-1 - to this date some Saluki fans still blame Gerry Pollard
