  • Major brawl at Chicago high school game

Another brawl breaks out, this time at Seton Academy during a game with Chicago Leo. Seton was leading late in the game. A fight broke out on the floor and technical fouls were called, but before they could be shot, fights broke out among the spectators, and spilled out onto the floor. The Seton team left the floor, the refs went home before the game ended, and then the Seton Athletic Director started threatening a Sun Times sportswriter not to report what was happening. So the writer left the gym, and the game was called off with no winner.

These teams need year-long suspensions and the guy who threatened a sportswriter needs to be fired immediately and not put on the usual paid suspension

"Seton athletic director Deon Tolliver just got in my face and told me 'I don't want to see any of this in the paper'.
When I informed him I would have to mention that there was a brawl, he threatened me again then told me to 'Get out of my gym!' Gladly..."

well, Dean, you are not going to get your wish...here is Millar's writeup in the Sun Times

Heard there was problems at the Morgan Park ,Simeon game also. Hate to say this but if things don't change up there it is going to revert back to the '80s when they played after school with only family in the gym. That would be a shame because the basketball is awfully good up there.

Seaton Acad. is a piece of work and should be kicked out of the IHSA. If Marty Hickman could he probably would. Worst display of sportsmanship I've ever seen a couple years ago at the state tourney. They need to take lessons from Springfield Griffin.

I would hope the people in charge at Seton Academy will put their 50-year reputation of fine facility for education and serving the people on the far south end of the Chicago metropolis ahead of this athletic circus.
Seton has become a bit of a basketball power - reaching the Final Four of March Madness 3 times in the past 5 years - but don't that the lust for more basketball glory ruin their long held reputation.

It's sad that a few can ruin the reputation of so many. Ah, the good ole days when you could go to a high school game, usually walking both ways, and not have a worry in the world.

this same writer is very impressed with a 6-4 shooting guard from Joliet that has been scoring 20-30 pts per game

Chicago Public League coaches & players set as priority this season...
                      safety & anti-violence....
they met with Chicago police for strategy & planning...

kinda sad but necessary that concerns about violence & brawls at athletic contests take such high priority & urgency

..don't think we've any such episodes in or near Peoria of violence breaking out at an athletic event - can anyone recall?
I know we came close at the IHSA basketball finals with a few skirmishes that got some fans out of their seats but it ended quickly
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has completed its investigation into the 2013 IHSA Class 2A Boys Basketball State Championship game between Harrisburg High School and Seton Academy and has announced sanctions resulting from that investigation. “This was an ugly and embarrassing incident,” said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman. “Harrisburg High School, Seton Academy and the contest officials all share in the blame for the outcome. We also recognize that...

Why meet with the police? Whatever they do to help stop it will be called wrong.

yeah - as in most major cities - the rates of violence & even murders are way up since a few recent occurrences that have made the police feel they are being targeted for their actions..
I suspect some police would be more reluctant now compared to a few months ago - to go into a gym to quell violence -

T not sure because I wasn't in town last winter but I thought I heard their were some major problems at the Manual Central game last year. Can anyone help ? Was that true? Pretty sure it was. I even think the game may have been at the RC.

Your memory is actually pretty good, wily! When you posted that, I also thought I recalled some events that were reported at the Renaissance Coliseum last January at the Manual-Central game.

Here is a post from our board after the Jan. 19, 2015 Manual-Central game with a mention about several fights that reportedly broke out in the lobby and on the street outside the Ren-Col-

"Peoria, Bradley police respond to fight reports"
Peoria - Peoria and Bradley University police responded to reports of fights Monday night at Renaissance Coliseum after a high school basketball game.
..people leaving the coliseum between 9 and 9:45p.m. said multiple fights broke out in the lobby and outside the coliseum.
Several fans said fights in the atrium between high school students caused a crowd to stampede out of the building.
Numerous police cars from the Peoria and Bradley departments blocked off Main Street..."

As is often the case, the Peoria Journal Star downplayed gang and violence issues that happened in the Bradley neighborhood. That has happened many times before, even with some serious violence and injuries. In this case, they did not even mention those issues in their articles about the game. I have heard from multiple sources that Bradley does not want issues like that reported or publicized, and lobbies police and local media to downplay or quash them. It showed up only in that short blurb from the police blotter report later that night. Also, interestingly, now neither a Google search nor a search of the PJ Star archives even finds any mention of that report, but thanks to the Bradleyfans.com message board, it was saved for posterity.
