  • Wichita State's Gregg Marshall says he'll play Kansas, only if he can get a home-and-home

Gregg Marshall says, "I'm not going to Allen Fieldhouse for a check"-
Wichita State's Marshall on Kansas: "I'm not going to Allen Fieldhouse for a check" (Fox Sports Kansas City) With Wichita State's recent run of success, more than a few people have asked why the Shockers can't get a shot at the state's premier program.

That's the difference between our program and WSU we want cup cakes and they want good teams to play.

Really - Gregg Marshall is a bit hypocritical it would seem but he has to be in Kansas for political reasons
Wichita State certainly is and always will be a little sister to Kansas...
But Marshall and WSU have done games for the "chack" - about as much as any other team in the MVC

2013-14 - they just played Tennessee but not at home
2012-13 - they also went to Tennessee
2010-11 - they went to Louisiana to play LSU
2009-10 - none but they went to UMKC - why?
2007-08 - likewise - & they went to Appalachian State - just as weird?
2006-07 - the last year of Turgeon they went to Syracuse & LSU as guarantee games

We all know it is next to impossible to get top teams to play at midmajors - so keep hoping -
Personally I have never seen the issue - apparently an ego issue with going to someone else's house to play - like BU did at Duke...
but he's never gonna get Kansas to come play him on his home court - but he feels he must announce his position for a show of strength..

Tennessee was a H/H that we moved to Intrust because we want to play one game a year there.

LSU was part of a H/H/N agreement that Turgeon agreed to. LSU then changed coaches and postponed it.

We went to UMKC because we recruit Kansas City. I believe that was a 3 for 1 deal. Could have been 2-1/3-2.

Appy State was part of bracket busters.

Syracuse was a buy game. They paid us 100k plus travel expenses and hotel and we punked their ass.

We also back in 05 or 06 went to Detroit to play a one time game on ESPN against Michigan State.

Buy games aren't something we really do. Maybe at a chance to play the best of the best we'd consider it, but it's not likely. We should NEVER sell ourselves to KU. We don't need that game.

UMKC would like to play a home-and-home with Wichita State, I'd imagine. I don't imagine they ever get any consideration for such a thing because the game would have infinitely more meaning to UMKC than it does for Wichita State.

            It's the same thing.

He SHOULD have to and he will if he wants to play them, because they aren't comparable programs. The value proposition is wholly one way.

schools like Tennessee simply do not often go out and play true road games - they only do it once this year and rarely ever more than once (except in conference)
So - it is not surprising that the game was NOT on Wichita's campus nor on their true home court - I would not easily be convinced that it was "moved" rather than agreed-upon

If you move & play a game at an independent site - like if BU or Illinois set up a game at United Center - it might technically be viewed in the books as a home game but it's really an independent site that those bigger schools are more likely to play at.
But again - I am not being critical of Gregg Marshall at all - he's only saying & doing what he believes best - but...
if a Valley school wants to play an SEC or ACC school - you are simply gonna have to go on the road and play them there -
as ISU is doing by playing at Louisville last year and at Northwestern this year..
..or get lucky enough as we have done - and catch them as part of a tourney (Iowa, Vandy..)

SubGod pretty much nailed it. I would add that WSU has actually put a standing offer on KU's table of one game at AFH, one at Sprint in KC and one at Intrust, starting in Lawrence or KC. They still won't go for it.

The decision to move the Tennessee game to Intrust was made this past summer and announced in August. That series started last season, so I don't think you can assume the location was agreed upon when the contract was signed.

We also have a H/H with Alabama, starting tonight. They'll come to Wichita next year. It may or may not be played at Intrust. That decision won't likely be made until the schedule is closer to completion next summer.

Want to trade one of those Alabama games for UIPUI?

BF9 look at their roster and than look at ours and it becomes pretty evident why that is. We are a long why from being at WSU's level. Geno was left with a mess and he still has a long way to go b4 we compete.IMO

Northwestern returns the game to Normal next season.

DePaul plays at Redbird Arena on Sunday night. We return the game to them next year.
