Yes DC Van Fleet is the kid I was thinking of. He is gonna be real special b4 he is done and I would take a couple Baker like kids also. Lefty it sure does matter because by redshirting he was only gaining maturity and not D-1 experience against other teams. I haven't lost faith in Geno yet but sure wish we could get some Frosh that could give us important minutes.Especially bigs that can step out to the 3 point line and drain a few. Oh yes, and if they could guard some people that would also help. That's for B12 on the other board.

Wichita seems to do it with athletic kids who can score in alot of different ways. It seems to work for them but hasn't for us. Maybe with the supposed talent were're bringing in, it may, but not seeing it yet. I don't understand why other schools freshmen come in and contribute right away but we don't seem to get much help from ours in their first year????? Is it we are not recruiting kids good enough to help us or are we just not doing a very good job of developing them?????

      Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
When the majority first commit they are always said to be good enough to help us right away.

Unfortunately, I have never seen a coach say they recruited a player that would not give valuable assistance in the first year. Of course that does not apply to transfers.

This is not a criticism of any BU coaches past or present. This is common to all schools and staffs.

Ron Baker was such a kid - that Gregg Marshall picked up late in the redcruiting year (April of 2011) and had said from the time he even offered, that Baker would need a redshirt year.

That's why I said majority, not all. I think most of the bigger players on the Bradley rosters over the years have been considered "projects."

Actually, it was Ron's choice to Red-Shirt. About one week before the season starts Marshall has a frank conversation with each new freshman about what their role will be this year and what they need to work on in order to get more PT. He then talks about what he envisions their role to be as a 5th year senior. At that point, it is the players choice if they want to RS or not. VanVleet is the only freshman since Toure Murry that was not told that he would benefit from an RS year.

Baker was unique in that he didn't play AAU basketball, and only a few people saw tape on him (beating the crap out of 3A Western Kansas teams). KSU offered a preferred walk-on spot. KU didn't return his call. Marshall offered him a 4 year scholarship over 5 years as he had no available schollies left over when Baker committed. The story goes that when Baker came in Marshall told him that he would be the first wing off the bench and the back-up PG if he didn't want to RS. This inferred that he would get PT over junior Demetric Williams and senior David Kyles. Of course he red-shirted and has been starting ever since.

wufan - that one article about Baker is from sping of his senior year in high school - and it says Ron had already figured on redshirting as part of the plan even that far back
