Just speculating on who will win this week...not a lot of games were scheduled...

Half the MVC either didn't play this past week or lost their games so they are kinda out of the running...
But Milton Doyle had a 32 point game (although vs. Campbell) and Marcus Marshall made a surprise return and had 20 pts.
Tekele Cotton & Darius Carter had nice games for the Shockers vs. Tennessee, and UNI won 2 games so maybe Tuttle.
I think the league would love to highlight the newcomer Loyola, so I think Doyle.

Here are a few of the best players this past week, I know none of our guys are in the running - not even Swopshire for his shooting performance
...There's no clear-cut single dominating player so I wouldn't be surprised whoever it is...

For POW - Evansville's DJ Balentine played just one game but the Aces lost despite he had 26, InSU's Manny Arop had games of 16 & 25, UNI's Seth Tuttle played only one game but had 14 & 11,
but the two best offensive performances of the week are
            (A) SIU's Desmar Jackson for his games of 28 & 19
            (B) Cleanthony Early had two games of 26 & 16/with 10 rebs
Given how well Wichita plays, I would give the nod to Early.

As Newcomer - a Drake kid named Jacob Envold was 7-10 and had 16 pts to help beat WMU, and ISU's Daishon Knight had three double digit games...so I'd give it to the guy with the three good games.

I think Walt Lemon has a legitimate chance for this week's Player of the Week - except that we lost last Wednesday's game so badly...
so I think that puts him behind guys like Early and Van Vleet who helped their team go 2-0..
but Walt leads the MVC in conference scoring at 24 ppg

Other good performances from this past week --

UNI's Seth Tuttle 24 pts against us but only 3 against WSU
InSU's Manny Arop had 18 in one game and Khristian Smith had 27 in another but neither had two good games
DJ Balentine had 20 in the big loss to Drake and 23 vs. Indiana State, but losing both games hurts his chances
Likewise Desmar Jackson with games of and 19 & 19 but SIU lost them both
Van Vleet had 22 and Early 18 against UNI, then 17 & 23 in the win over SIU so I think it will be one of them - and especially Van Vleet as he is showing good PG skills.

For Newcomer - Jordan Daniels had a 28 pt game against Evansville but only 6 against us
Loyola's Christian Thomas had 19 in a loss to InSU, then 10 against MSU & Devon Turk had 30 in Loyola's win
...so nobody stood head and shoulders above the rest but I'd give it to Daniels
Hawley played a great game against us but he isn't really a newcomer

Fred Van Vleet is indeed this week's MVC Player of the Week
ST. LOUIS -- Wichita State's Fred VanVleet was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, it was announced today.

And they pulled a surprise - and went with Milton Doyle as Newcomer of the Week
Doyle averaged 10 & 5 while his own teammate Turk averaged 19 ppg in his two games and Daniels averaged 17 ppg in his two games
(although Turk may not be considered a newcomer because he did play last year at Loyola, but then Doyle did play last year at Kansas!)

BTW - a couple more comments about the POW...

has anyone ever wondered just who decides this? I guess I am curious that nobody has ever revealed the method or the people used to decide this award - but even more puzzling to me - is that nobody has ever seemed to care to ask the question of who decides.
When HOF'ers are chosen, or when preseason or post-season All Conference is chosen, or the weekly Top 25 polls, or the Academy Awards - we wanna know who the voters are and that becomes sometimes even more of a topic that the selection itself..

anyway -- I'd love to know just who makes the selections....

and I also would love to see a COACH of the WEEK....because I think this week, Geno Ford would have been the obvious recipient - Geno made some nice adjustments, shortened his rotation, cut back on the outside shots, fed the ball inside, switched up defenses, and it made a near-50 point turnaround between the UNI & Drake games...
it was a nice bit of coaching from the staff......

I am not aware of any conference that chooses a Coach of the Week. There are obvious reasons.

The Jan. 13 awards go to..

Player of the Week - Jarmar Gulley of Missouri State - you could have guessed this as we helped him get this award

Newcomer of the Week - UNI's Wes Washpun
