UNI also plays LaSalle in the St. Thomas, USVI Paradise Jam,
The SIU game is in Estero, FL against St. Bonaventure in the Gulf Coast Showcase,
and the Wichita/DePaul game is not at DePaul, it is in Kansas City at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic
one game already underway and kinda exciting is a back and forth battle between San Diego & UIC...
at Gulf Coast Showcase
..with 4:07 to go in the game it's 64-62 ..
San Diego hits a 3 to make it 72-70 with 5 sec & then fouls - and then UIC misses BOTH FT's - but USD fails to get the rebound so UIC hits 2 FT's at the end to win 74-70 so UIC gets their first win over a DI
This is the same mid-major tourney SIU is in
Evansville plays at Indiana tomorrow - the Aces are currently the top 3-pt shooting team in the nation - 53%
DJ Balentine - who should win the MVC Player of the Week - is hitting 15-23 (65.2%)
btw - San Diego University has the "TORERO" and their mascot and they even have a name and a personality to go with...
Diego Torero
but isn't this the same thing as depicting a vicious Indian with a tomahawk?
Here we have a Latin-looking, Frito-Bandito-lookalike engaged in a very politically incorrect task of slaughtering innocent bulls for the entertainment of the viewers?
One more thing- Cleveland State played Kentucky and the enormous underdogs played a tight zone and dared Kentucky to shoot long, while packing it in and cutting off the manner they usually score - their athletic studs driving the hoop.
Cleveland State led much of the way and almost won - nice coaching job by Gary Waters .. use a little thinking and deny the opponents' strength.
Wichita 90-72 over DePaul - Tommy Hamilton just one rebound!
SIU loses to St. Bonaventure 83-71 - SBU's Matthew Wright goes for 32, SIU's Desmar Jackson 25
UNI in a quality win over LaSalle 65-50
It appears the cream is rising from the rest of the crop in the Valley...
Wichita St., Indy St., UNI seem to be our top 3.
Too early to tell where Missouri St. (injuries TBD), Drake, and Evansville stand, but they appear to be in the 2nd tier, with BU right with 'em probably.
Then the bottom-dwellers: ISU-red, Loyola, SIU
These 3 will really hurt the league this season and a loss by any team at the top to these guys might be detrimental to any At-Large possibilities down the road.
I think ISU will have some surprise wins - they already own one of the quality wins the MVC has (over Northwestern)
They are an athletic & talented team but so far inconsistent with all the new guys working intot he rotation
It has been puzzling - except for Wichita, several of the teams in the MVC have at least one puzzling loss that maybe they shouldn't have had... and a few simply haven't played anyone tough
-Indiana State lost at Belmont - nothing to be ashamed of but if they are a potential 2nd NCAA team in the MVC, this does not help their resume
-UNI lost at Ohio & GMU
-Missouri State is 4-0 but we'll see how they do with starters out/injured
-Drake 3-1 but their 3 wins are not very impressive
-Evansville likewise hasn't lost but the tougher part of their non-conference slate starts in about 8 hours
-ISU has 2 home losses - maybe both should have been wins
-SIU hasn't beaten a D-I and Loyola has 3-4 bad losses for the Valley
The MVC overall record is 33-18, but eight of those wins are against Non-DI's, and another several are really low D-I's and transitional DI's
As far as I'm concerned, we had 6 postseason contenders (WSU, InSU, UNI, MSU, us, UE) this year. UNI is really the one that slipped but I don't even think you can call @Ohio, N-Maryland and @George Mason bad losses at all. InSU more than made up for a not-bad loss @Belmont with a win @Notre Dame. Only other losses from the top 6 were ours. There's not a single bad loss among the top 6.
The top 6 are 19-6. I'm not worried yet. Although UNI has a few tough games left, they gotta get at least a couple.
SIU's Bronson Verhines (starter and top rebounder - 6 ppg/8 rpg) has sprained ankle and is out for two weeks Hunter Gibson (sophomore SG, juco transfer from Three Rivers CC) has left the team and will transfer from SIU - he had not played a single minute yet this year but already used his redshirt year at Three Rivers)
