  • Shg football coach and program

I have been around sports my whole life but I've NEVER seen anything like the Sportsmanship displayed by MR. KEN Leonard , head coach of SHG this week. He totally represents what sports should be about. If any person in sports deserves to be recognized by his peers it is Ken ,his school, players and supporters. He not only developes great football players but he teaches his kids the more important things in life. The life lessons he taught his kids this week will be remembered for the rest of their lives. If there was an award for Sportsman of the year it would be no contest. Thank you Mr. Leonard and those involved with SHG for showing people that football is just a game and there is more important things in life.

thanks - nice to hear great comments in sports - I don't follow HS football very closely - if you have time, give us a little description of what you had observed about him...

I'd be happy to. First of all the head coach set up donations at his school and enough money was raised to pay for buses to take Washington kids and adults to Springfield for the game. The TV broadcast said nine buses made the trip. Then the school fed the players before and after the game. They also were going to feed any Washington fans that wanted to stay, after the game. Then on SH's next to last possession they had a 1st and goal at the three yard line leading 44-14. Ken instructed his QB to take a knee until Washington took over on downs. Washington did not make a first down and had to punt. Ken again instructed his QB to take a knee until time ran out. It would have been very easy to score again but chose not to run up the score. Then after both teams shook hands and exchanged hugs both teams knealt and prayers were said.
It was great to see and sadly something we won't see in public schools. You can bet I'm pulling for SHG next week . Far and away the best display of sportsmanship I've ever seen in my sports career. The IHSA should be very proud of Coach Leonard and his program. A true example of what High School sports should be.

thanks - good story... I saw part of the 2nd quarter then beginning of 3rd - and it was 23-14, then I flipped it on a little later and the score had ballooned to 44-14...so I felt a little bad for the Panthers.

There are several articles about his sportsmanship

Great article thanks,T. Wouldn't the world be a much better place if everyone had the same mindset that the football program at SHG displayed in Springfield yesterday. When I sit in the bleachers and hear what people yell at their kids, coaches and of course referees, the sportsmenship shown by SHG is to be commended. By the way ,I have no ties to SHG or Coach Leonard don't even know him but that is what High School sports should be about. Just to set the record straight,I'm also not from Washington but have many friends that live over there. Some affected ,some not but my thoughts and prayers will continue for quick healing and recovery. Thank you Coach Leonard and your entire program for showing us that there is more to a game than winning or losing.

Don't know Coach Leonard, but he is obviously a class act. So, too, is Coach Crouch, whom I do know. Same goes for his wife and kids.
