  • Final: Bradley 74 UT Pan Am 54

Bradley's next game is against the University of Texas Pan-American on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7:00 PM at Carver Arena. It will be the first Saturday night game at home on the BU schedule, and one of just 4 Saturday home games.
There is no TV available for this game.

Bradley (4-2) is coming off losses at Illinois and Arizona State. The UT-Pan Am Broncs (4-4), who are members of the Western Athletic Conference. They won their last game Wednesday at Lamar 66-61.

With all the basketball talent in Texas, UT-PA has only 3 players on their active roster who are from Texas, but they have 5 players from Chicago, and one from Merrillville, Indiana (near Chicago).

They have a couple 5th year graduate transfer players, one of whom is 6'4" guard Shaun Noriega who scored 14 points against Bradley last year when he was at South Florida. Noriega has not yet appeared in a game for UT-Pan Am after coming off a fractured foot that occurred just after he played against Bradley and caused him to redshirt last season.

The other 5th year transfer is Javorn Farrell, a 6'5" guard who is a transfer from UMass. He starts and leads them in scoring with a 16.8 ppg average.

    Their other 4 starters are:
Shaquille Hines is a 6'7" sophomore forward from Harlan HS in Chicago. He has started all 8 games, and is their 2nd leading scorer with a 11.5 ppg average, and is their top rebounder with a 7.1 rpg average.

Shaquille Boga, a former Bradley recruit from St. Louis. He is a 5'11" junior guard who initially went to UW-Milwaukee, then Mineral Area junior college. He has started all 8 games and is their 3rd leading scorer with an average of 11.4 ppg

Justin Leathers is their leading returning scorer from last year. He is a 6'5" senior forward who has started all 8 games, and is 4th in scoring at 8.1 ppg, and their 2nd leading rebounder with 6.5 rpg.

Josh Cleveland has been their other starter. He is a 6'6" senior forward from Texas who averages 5.6 ppg, however, he did not play in their last game at Lamar Wednesday.

Lauri Toivonen has been their 6th man, and the only other player to average more than about 10 minutes a game. He started their last game in place of Josh Cleveland. He is originally from Finland, via a juco. He is a 6'7" forward who plays 20 minutes a game, and averages 4.0 ppg and 3.4 rpg.

of the 19 players on their roster, they have an amazing mix of where they got them from...
only six came to UTPA directly out of high school...and one of them redshirted and is now a RSFr...

-two are 5th year grad transfers
-4 are juco transfers who went juco after HS - one from a Finnish HS
-a 5th juco transfer did a year of prep school before juco
-a 6th juco kid was at another D-I first then juco
-3 came from a prep school - one who went there from a German HS
-and two came directly as transfers from other DI's

One of their kids Alex Majewski a 6-8 Freshman from Chicago Brother Rice HS - has played in all 7 games (11 mpg) and is hitting 46% on his 3-pointers
we had a brief mention of Majewski on the board last year

We should get back to winning in this game but I will be interested to see a couple things...Hopefully we bounce back in at least three areas that were problems the past two games.

#1 - down the stretch last year Walt started to put up more points - he averaged 17 ppg in MVC play but showed that he could do way better..
In August in the Bahamas - he scored well and didn't even log huge minutes.
Then in exhibitions he put up monster numbers - 38 pts & 33 pts...

but since the regular season has started, his scoring has dropped off - and at times he has struggled. I know 16 ppg is good, but his shooting pct is way below last year's and he's had a lot of turnovers.
He's never really moved to the off-guard spot as was suggested he would at times...
Will Walt have a breakout game - and start putting up the scoring numbers we know he can. I predict he will use this opportunity against UTPA's small (5-10) point guard - to create some good scoring opportunities.

#2 Omari has been our best 3-pt threat but over the past two games (better opponents) he has hit only 1-8 from 3-pt.
His ballhandling & passing is limited (1 apg) but he has the athleticism to drive and score - so I would like to see him do this more.

#3 Auston Barnes was repeatedly said to be the team's best 3-point shooter in practices and in the preseason.
He was shooting almost 50% from the arc 'til these last two games, now his 3-pt shooting pct has dropped to just 28.6%, and he looks intimidated when taking his shots.
He has a total of 14 3-pt attempts taken this year - that's about half of what he took all last season at Odessa....

Plus - team-wise - What once looked like we might be a good 3-pt shooting team - now has evaporated and our team 3-pt shooting pct. is one of the worst 3 in the MVC.
Hopefully we bounce back and start hitting again.

#4 there was a whole lot of hope that SZ would be the atheltic shooter we needed to give us that Jeremy Crouch-type outside threat - and multiple reports about how much of a surprise player he was, he led the team in steals and deflections in the practices and scrimmages, and would even be competing for a starting spot.
Thus far - once the real games started - we have not seen any of that -
SZ has yet to make a 3-pointer, he has zero steals, the worst A/T ratio of any guard, and against the more competitive teams we have faced, he isn't even getting any playing time except a couple minutes in late garbage time.
In the early exhibitions - he averaged almost 10ppg, as many points-per-game as he has now scored ion total over all six games in the regular season and he scored all of the points he has this season in the first three games and none since. Hopefully he'll start contributing more on a regular basis...we need that depth we heard about.

It will be an A+ on Sat look at who they are playing. The bench will even look good.

we all want basically the same thing - good play, lots of wins, and post-season success - three years of the worst stretch of BU basketball in most people's memory has caused some disgruntlement - is that any surprise...

bu fan 9 still comes to each and every game - BU is extremely fortunate to have such good & loyal fans

When ISU or SIU hit the skid - their home attendances dropped down into the 2000's & 3000's range!

Speaking of loyalty - just look at the lower bowl...
I'd say of all the seats in my area those fans have only made one or maybe two out of the three games so far....
KW sure was concerned when the attendance at Ren-Col was dismal - even betting a hot dog once that the numbers announced were substantially inflated and calling the turnout "embarrassing", and one other time calling it the "smallest official BU home crowd in my 57-year-old memory"...
.....but he's been silent about the attendance at Carver.

UTPA just got done playing and beat Lamar...
Lamar is bad - they fall to 1-6 - their only win over Savannah State

                              UTPA's top players..
                              Boga was just 1-9
Javorn Farrell had 22, Shaquille Hines 18 pts

They will come into Peoria at 4-4 and an RPI of about 300
