Notre Dame plays Army in basketball in a couple days.
I can't think of an upcoming game that the posters on this board will be less interested in.
HOWEVER, this is a 'backstory' that a few college basketball fans may enjoy.
The last time ND played Army in basketball was in the NIT in 1968.
ND won 62-58 over a pretty good Army squad. Army Coach Bobby Knight was very unhappy with some calls that went against his Cadets that evening (and you know about Bobby Knight). Knight felt that the Irish got the benefit of all the calls that evening in the disappointing loss(this was probably Knight's best Army squad).
Fast-forward a couple of years-the 1970-71 season. Knight is still coaching at Army. Late in a very close game against Fordham, with the game still going on (and still in doubt), Fordham Coach Digger Phelps walks over to Knight and sticks out his hand. "I have to shake hands now Bobby, because the students are going to carry me off the court after we win."
Fordham wins & Phelps does get carried off the court.
One year later, Knight is in his first year as the head coach of Indiana. It is the dedication game of the new Assembly Hall at IU. The opponent is Notre Dame and their new head coach-Digger Phelps.
Knight has a long memory. To this day, he still acknowledges that he remembers that handshake in the Fordham game.
Indiana beat Notre Dame and Phelps that night: 94-29. Yes 29-not a typo.
That game is still the largest margin of victory (65 pts)in Indiana history.
Knight had his revenge-a 2 for 1 if you will.....
Two Bradley recruits-Ken Wolbeck of Peoria Spalding and Gary Novak of LaSalle-Peru played for ND that night.
The Irish were 8 for 61 from the field vs IU...the ND hockey team, who also played that night, had a better shooting percentage than their basketball counterparts.
