  • PJS Hoops Section

The Hoops section is out this morning...

lots of articles..but first a page about the PJ Star panel...DR, KW, Jamal Collier, Kevin Capie, and Wes Huett.
They pick Bradley 4th in the MVC (page E12)

"In the Right Direction" - kind of a summary article

"Never Satisfied" - a real nice column about Walt

"Speeding Pickett" (you have to be fluent in headline writers' pun-ese) - is about Tyshon

"Champaign to the Hilltop" - a column about Mike Shaw who isn't eligible this year..lots of really nice things said about him -
And I hope it's not overhype like we saw with last year's articles about Shayok Shayok, Jalen Crawford, and last year's transfers....
...one comment is "he is so hard to guard" ...and that the Valley "doesn't have anybody who can stop him.."
and .. if "we get him the ball .. he'll score four out of five times."

"Ready to Answer" - Ka'Darryl Bell

"One Cool Customer" - Auston Barnes

"BU 101" - brief article about the three freshmen

"Crunching the Numbers" - about stat analysis - did you know Bradley led the nation in...
"percent of times that we forced a turnover on the opponents' out of bounds plays under the basket"?

The rest is about other MVC topics (Creighton being replaced by Loyola rehash), ISU, WIU, ICC, womens' BBall, Illini, and other topics...

None of the Hoops articles appear to be posted online, so we can't give links for out of town fans.

But one note- In the first article, a nice article by Dave Reynolds about the Braves and Walt Lemon, titled "IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION", Dave Reynolds says this in his first sentence-

After scoring 42 percent of Bradley's points in two exhibition games last week, Walt Lemon, Jr. knows such a heavy load should not continue into the regular season.

42%? Is that how they figure math? Bradley scored 85 points against UIU, and 70 points against WVWC for a total of 155 points. Walt scored 38 against UIU and 33 against WVWC, for a total of 71 points.

    71 points out of 155 total = 46%, not 42%.
How hard is it to get the main fact in the first line correct?

I'm not excusing the error, but why would you ever check that?

I didn't need to check it. It was obvious the instant I read it. 71 is obviously more than 42% of 155.

Let the nit picking begin. I didn't think it would take long b4 the PJ Star haters aired their feelings. Just don't get it. As they say "To each his own". Oh well if we don't want to read about it we can go to TOB. Bet it won't be there. Great job on the Hoops section. IMO

The Pantagraph has a preview article about the Missouri Valley Conference, but don't waste time trying to find much mention of Bradley-

for a fan base that has historically been obsessed with nitpicking - even right down to calling out spelling errors in people's posts - why are we now calling headline factual errors "nitpicking"?

We have also seen a media that searched message board posts in order to find obscure comments and write a column labeling segments of fans racist back when JL was hired over WM.

Why, I recently saw a post with a rant blaming everything bad in the last few years and declining attendance
(even all the 30-pt blowout losses & loss of fans in the past two seasons!)
..on the fact that BU cow-towed back in 2002 and hired a coach that was too old, and too connected with past and with the gray hairs....

So I decided to check the facts on that one, too....to see if this was a legit argument or was it complete nitpicking??

Here's what I found and I think it proves the epitome of nitpicking...

                Age when hired by Bradley
                Geno Ford - 37.5
                Jim Les - 38.5
                Jim Molinari - 37.5
                Stan Albeck - 55.0
                Dick Versace - 38.0
                Joe Stowell - 38.5
                Chuck Orsborn 38.5

I enjoyed the PJS Hoops Section but I am puzzled why they had absolutely nothing on Omari Grier who is one of our starters and a newcomer although he sat out last year. Speculation from the coaches is that Omari could very well be our second leading scorer this year and yet he was completely ignored by the PJS----WHY??

There was also no mention of newcomer Chris Blake, but an entire article about Auston Barnes.

I have to ask, "who cares what is the point". All I want is for Geno to get us back to the Verace or Orsborn era. I also don' t care if WL scores 50% of our points if it means we are contending for a title. I think the Hawk scored a high % of our points and that worked out pretty good for us.Hope WL stays healthy and does the same. Go Braves.

there is no question we agree on most of those points...but when Hawk was scoring 20-30 points he did also have numerous other players with him who helped....
guys who played in the NBA (Les, Winters, Williams), and other pretty talented guys (Donald Powell, Anthony Manuel...)

BTW - speaking of Walt and how great of a player he has become and how much he means to our chances....

Wonder if anyone else remembers when we first recruited Walt? He was pretty obscure & unknown and there were more than a couple doubters who thought he was too far under the radar

We haven't even played a real game yet with this roster. We might have those guys.

here's some effort to catch up with Jordan Prosser
Bradley senior center Jordan Prosser is featured in the 12th installment of the 2013-14 Meet the Braves series by Dave Snell.
