Reynolds: New rules may make a monster

bet if they keep this up and we see 50-60 fouls per game and Walt scored 30 every game - other coaches without such an offensive player will raise he** an they will change the rules

I think just the extra 30 minutes for every game, the parade to the free throw line, and too many players fouling out will be enough for fans and coaches to demand the NCAA back off on these new rules.

I'd put money on the fact that the rule will get called tightly in the first month, but then will get enforced in mostly unfortunate situations. I can imagine in tight games down the stretch of a game when the big name teams are down to "lesser" teams, we will see fouls start to get called on it. I expect it to get called in tight games like the inadvertent elbow above the shoulders to change the momentum of a game.

Correct me if I am wrong but have not these rules always been there but this season they have decided to emphasize them. Seems like every season the Refs emphasize a rule to make a point then back off midway thru the season. One year it was the 3 second call, another year I think it was moving picks.

            Yes they have.
Players will have to learn to play basketball like it was intended to be played.
Yes, the steal is fun to watch if the one stealing the ball is on your team but not so fun the other way around. There will still be steals but they will now have to be earned because of quickness not because the defender mugged the offensive player.
Players will learn to back off and move their feet to defend.
I really love the change in the blocking foul as I've wondered for along time how an offensive player can change direction when they have already left their feet and are in the air. This rule was long overdue and is the way it was intended in the first place.

T not a chance in h-ll that will happen. That's what the NCAA wants done. They want the game cleaned up and if it takes 50-60 fouls a game to clean it up ,they could care less. Is it gonna be boring, you bet it is but it won't like the WWF anymore. Must say big advantage to WL and our Braves and coaches complaining won't get the rule changed. Not saying that the stripes won't let up later on in the year but if they want to work post season games and the rules committee doesn't make a change in mid stream, they better continue calling the game the way the NCAA wants it called.

Wily, do you think the high school officials will follow suit?

Not sure what changes the IHSA has for them this year. Stressing hand checking and post play has been in the books for several years and can't say I've seen much difference yet. Have you?

If this had enforced last year Wichita would have beat Louisville. Teams with athletic guards should be able to take advantage of this. Coaches might have to earn their paycheck and teach the proper way to play defense. We will see how BU has adjusted from the 1st exhibition game to the 2nd. If the refs are going to call it this way and keep calling it during the year it puts a premium on making layups and FT's, something we seem to have issues with during the last few years.

One way to achieve a rebalance would to be enforce the original definition of "carrying the ball". If the original definition was enforced, a lot of the sudden change-of-dirction moves would be taken away.

Any change in the carrying-the-ball definition would definitely offset some of the new restrictions. However, we have a lot of turnovers.
