Certainly will be a lot of teachable moments from this game. Can't imagine Walt missing 10 FT's in a game again. I would hope 14 made 3's is the high water mark for an opposing team this season. I guess we will see if the refs point of emphasis on hand checking and being closely guarded will be kept up during the season. Hopefully the guys learn from this and are better on Saturday.
Just home from the game- I'll give my impressions, since most people who read this were not at the game. There weren't many people there....I would estimate around 1,000 even though the official attendance will be listed thousands higher than that because the game was part of many fans' season ticket plan.
Walt was terrific- 38 points, 10-20 from the field and 17-26 from the FT line, and only 2 turnovers for the game in 35 minutes. He looked like he could score whenever he wanted to. Tyshon played solid, but did not do much on offense. Auston barnes played well, had 10 points and 13 rebounds, though he will not rebound like that against bigger and more athletic teams. UIU was a very short, and extremely un-athletic team. There is no way they should have been within 25 points of Bradley, except we played poor defense and allowed them innumerable open shots, and we allowed them 32 rebounds when every Bradley played was taller and more athletic than the guy they guarded.
Omari Grier looked good at times on offense, but at other times he deferred to Walt, instead of looking to contribute with offense. I do believe he will be our second leading scorer by the end of the season. But he needs to work more on his defense, as he was one of the BU players that missed a lot of defensive responsibilities and allowed a ton of wide open threes.
The other starter- Jordan Prosser got into foul trouble and did not play much. He needs to adjust to the new foul rules, and stay in the game. Ka'Darryl Bell looked good again (he impressed in the Red-White). He was steady with his ball handling. Fields, Swopshire, Blake, and Wells were virtually invisible. Xzavier Taylor contributed 9 good minutes on the floor, he was good on defense, but picked up 3 fouls. He only scored 3 points, but his dunk was a highlight moment.
Overall a bit disappointing for this team to struggle against a really small, slow, unathletic team like UIU. Hopefully, it's just because it's early and they haven't meshed yet. But the concern I saw tonight is the lack of outside shooting again (other than Walt & Omari), and the defensive shortcomings and tendency to foul too much.
Just got back from the game. It's good to see the Braves back on the court, but clearly a 2 point win over an inferior opponent is not what I'd really like to see. Defensively, we have to get better. Our rotations looked slow, and we gave them way too many open 3 point looks. When the other team shoots 14-27 from deep, you're not going to win too many games.
Other notes:
Walt could average 25 points a game with these new rule changes. I'm not kidding. If the game is called like tonight, he'll average anywhere from 10-15 free throw attempts a game.
I was shocked Swopshire didn't play more. I know he got 2 quick fouls in the first half, but thought he'd get a few more minutes. He only played 3 minutes. Looks like he might be a redshirt candidate. I hope not, because I liked what I saw out of him in the Red and White Scrimmage, but that seems like a possibility.
Austin Barnes will be a nice addition. Don't think he'll average a double double, but he could be a poor man's Taylor Brown. Grabbing 7-10 rebound and probably scoring in that same range.
I had thought Xzaiver Taylor would be a candidate for a redshirt. After tonight, I don't think that anymore. Though I don't think he'll be a major contributor, he was impressive in his time on the court, and I think he'll give us some nice depth in the post.
Dave Reynolds tweeted that the official announced attendance figure was 3,085, but that "About half that in the building but new season-ticket base at Renaissance boosts the number."
I believe the actual number was closer to 1,000, but others who were there are free to post their estimate. Regardless, the attendance was embarrassing, IMO.
Here's how I saw it. I wasted $40 and will not do it next year if games are held here at those prices for a team we should have no trouble with.
Our defense was porous at best. If Walt gets hurt we can mail the season in. I do realize we have alot of new people but so did D111 Upper Iowa. They were smaller and not very athletic and we still struggled for 40 minutes.Walt with 38 points is going to be a handful. Really liked Greir's shot but not so much the other end of the floor. Barnes double double in his first game was also impressive. TP will have to give us more on the boards than he did tonight. Taylor has a ways to go but he is going to be a good one for us. He played alot more minutes than JP and I think he is going to be a factor by St.L.
The officiating was exactly what the NCAA wants this year. Is it fun to watch? I wouldn't say it was but if I was evaluating them on what the NCAA wants,I'd say they worked a very good game. It is not enjoyable watching 2 teams shoot 75 FT's and a game that normally lasts 2 hrs was about 2 hrs and 25 minutes. It will be interesting to see if they loosen up as the year goes on but they worked it just how the new rules were meant to be called.
In closing I think we have alot of potential but a long way to go and if our prices for these games at the RC don't kill our attendance watching free throw contests will probably put us to sleep before the games are over.
