  • Chet Walker and the 'Great Orange Juice Mystery'

Well, I still have my 1961 Dell Basketball Magazine out and am looking through it-remembering Bradley 'glory days'

Dell had Bradley ranked #2 in the Nation in their preseason predictions that season-behind Ohio St w Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek and Bobby Knight...Bradley had finished 27-2 the prior season and won the NIT-the future was very bright

BU's Junior Chet Walker was listed as a 2nd team AA...Tim Robinson was listed as the top sophomore in the Valley and Mack Herndon was listed as one of the top 10 players in the 'Prairie' states.

Here is the writeup on Chet in the AA section of the magazine:

"Chet Walker was a sick young man when New Yorkers saw him in action last year against St Bonaventure in the semi-finals of the NIT. Chet was the victim of what will probably go down in basketball history as the 'Great Orange Juice Mystery.'

Briefly, a bellhop brought a pitcher of orange juice to Chet and roommate Al Saunders in their hotel room before the Bonnie game, saying Coach Chuck Orsborn had sent it. Subsequently, it developed that the coach hadn't ordered any orange juice and the bellhop was no bellhop. In the ensuing excitement and fear that the juice might have been doped or poisoned (a laboratory analysis showed there was nothing in it but vitamins). Walker became upset and ill.(EDIT: I have to stop here and add what the magazine left out-Walker drank the OJ-Saunders did not). He had a tendency to get nervous and jittery before a game anyway, and the thought that he might have been poisoned made him fell even worse. So all he did was to score 27 points in 26 minutes.

The next night, against Providence, Chet was still weak and sat on the bench for all but three minutes as Providence outplayed and outscored the Braves. When Bradley caught fire late in the game, however, Walker proved himself a great clutch player. He soared up for a rebound on the defensive board against Jim Hadnot, who is four inches taller, in a leap that brought a roar from the crowd. In those last four minutes he swept the boards and scored two baskets to help insure Bradley's victory.

Throughout the 27-2 season, Chet was Bradley's key man. The 6-6 200 pound junior led the club in scoring (21.7ppg), shooting (56%) and rebounding -388 as a soph and ranked fourth in the nation in shooting. He goes up like a jumping-jack and has an excellent touch on taps. He has the strength and the bounce to go up for what coaches call the 'second jump.' He dribbles well, is a strong passer, and Orsborn calls him the 'finest all-round prospect ever to come to Bradley'."

POSTSCRIPT: In Chet's bio, he claims that he had lasting liver problems from the OJ incident and that it affected his jumping ability for the rest of his career. Walker wasn't exactly known for his leaping ability in the Pros....but there is a relatively famous picture of him soaring at least a foot above Providence's 6-10 Jim Hadnot in that NIT game-Chester had some 'hops' when he played for the Braves.

The Bradley team write-up from Dell 1961

"Bradley (Missouri Valley) had just about everything a coach could want last year and if there was a weak spot on the club we didn't notice it. The Braves boasted speed, finesse, depth, drive and experience. Coach Chuck Orsborn's charges were explosive on offense, running up an average of 80.7 ppg to rank 12th in the nation, and were effective on defense, allowing just 66 ppg. And the record reflected all of Bradley's abilities as the team finished with a 27-2 mark. In addition they won the NIT championship in top style, as the Braves came from a 12 point deficit to lick Providence, 88-72.

This year? The Braves appear just as potent to us, despite the loss of backcourt ace Mike Owens and corner man Dan Smith, and should win the Valley title now that Oscar Robertson has left Cincinnati.

The returning regulars and the sophs moving up present a formidable array. Leading the club is 6-6 All American Chet Walker (21.7) who is only a junior and still hasn't arrived at the peak of his powers. Up front with him will be 6-5 Mack Herndon (10.4), our all-sectional choice, who came up to the varsity in mid year and got hot in the NIT where he averaged almost 21 ppg. The third regular is 6-2 Al Saunders (13.1), a senior who has been seasoned through two varsity campaigns. The sophs, who are causing the fans around Peoria to rub their hands in anticipation, are 6-9 Walt Gerard, 6-5 Tim Robinson and 6-6 Hayden Johnson. Gerard averaged 23 ppg for Bradley's 13-2 frosh and Robinson, who can rebound as well as Gerard, averaged 21 ppg before running into trouble with his grades. The reserves are experienced with juniors 5-8 Chuck Hewitt, 6-0 Mickey Tieman, 6-5 Ed Wodka and 6-5 Lee Edwards leading the way. With Owens gone, the club will have to work a little harder on defense and may not press as often. Offensively, this team had shown it can adapt to almost any style."

      the 1960-61 season

The Braves won their first 12 games of the season.
The 12-0 start included an opening game win on the road vs Minnesota, and road wins over Butler and Drake. Home wins included Wisconsin and the big one vs Cincinnati (72-53). In game #2-the home opener, Chet Walker scored 50 pts vs UC Davis.

The winning streak was broken at Houston 59-60(the Braves had lost at Houston the previous year too-one of only two losses on that season). Houston was a tough place to play-especially for the black players on the Braves squad....

Bradley also lost the rematch at Cincinnati in a heart-breaker (72-73)-one game after beating Marquette in Peoria in a televised game(with Curt Gowdy(sp?) doing the tv play by play)

Next the Braves fell flat vs St Bonnie (in Madison Sq Garden):61-75(the worst defeat of the season)

Although the Braves beat Notre Dame in Chicago with Tim Robinson scoring a career high 28 and hammering Houston at home-Herndon scored a season high 30, the Braves strangely lost two crucial home games at the end of the season-to teams that they had already beaten on the road-to Drake & the finale to St Louis

The Braves finished a disappointing 21-5....including two 1 point losses on the road (hard to believe that was disappointing-but the expectations were higher)

I was just a kid then. I stood outside the locker room to get Tieman's autograph. If I remember right he was good looking guy with a flat top. Ed Wodka was like the team enforcer. Lee Edwards I ran into at the Velvet Freeze when it was at where Avantis is at now. He was getting something to eat and I got up enough courage to ask him for his autograph. He was gracious enough to not hesitate and signed the back of a photo I had. I kept that photo in my wallet for about 25 years

of course back in that day there was NO reliable way to test the orange juice for many different potential substances - and it has long been suspected that it was indeed spiked with some sort of laxative that induced cramping and "runs" and hampered Chet's performance.

here's the actualy newspaper account of that story - and it was 27 points in 23 minutes!!!

This Friday a wait of over 30 years finally, mercifully, comes to an end as Chet Walker gets inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Chet was one of the premier swingmen of the NBA during his 13-year playing career … Continue reading

BTW -- it was the NY City police detectives who confiscated the orange juice and then supposedly had it tested & reported it was clean...
(btw - the testing was NEVER done on Chet's orange juice - only on the glass Saunders had so even if the result is valid it still proves nothing about the possibility of tampering with Chet's juice)
and there has also long been a suspicion that the NYC detectives were under orders to just get rid of the evidence and let the issue die out for fear of scandal in New York of historic proportions -
recall - NEW YORK City basketball was just getting past all the gambling scandals of the 1950's - CCNY, etc...
Plus - Bradley was playing the local team (SBU)...
