Not a surprise. I have been hearing from ISU insiders since he committed that this was a good likelihood to happen. I have also heard there may be at least one more of ISU's recruiting class that could suffer a similar fate.
Well I'll be - seems I recall someone that predicted this - just like Jones & Hawkins were sitting out their first years...
..anyway - I thought once the kid was said to be "cleared & enrolled" that this just couldn't happen?
I agree - mid-majors have to occasionally take risks, but some fans have ripped BU's head coaches for taking the risky kids (Jermaine Brown, Ray Brown, Saihou Jassey)
but a few of the players ISU has taken risks on (Kenyon Smith, Bobby Hill, transfers Allen & Allen, etc...) did not pay off...can't think of many that did pay off

I don't disagree with your premise. I guess one counter-point would be, how often does one really know when someone is a risk, until it backfires, like the examples you gave? Sure there are rumors sometimes, but how does anyone know that Walt Lemon or Boo Richardson (just throwing out random names) weren't fringe type guys when it comes to qualifying? I'd assume there are plenty that are "iffy" types and no one ever knows but the coaches staff and compliance dept...
I think a coach has to take a chance on kids. Sometimes they work out and sometimes they dont. Who would have thought Hersey would work out as good as he did or even Anthony Parker, Aaron Zobrist, A coach wants to project where a player might be 2,3,4 years from now. Patrick O Bryant is another example. Had someone said we are getting a kid that will be a number one draft pick they would have thought we were drinking too much Kool-Aid
