  • Preseason All American team and POY

CBSSports.com has their picks for the Preseason All America team, and Player of the Year-

In brief: Their picks for All America are:
Marcus Smart G Oklahoma State Sophomore
    Russ Smith G Louisville Senior
    Andrew Wiggins F Kansas Freshman
    Doug McDermott F Creighton Senior
    Julius Randle F Kentucky Freshman

Player of the Year: Andrew Wiggins

Similar to the last couple years, I think the hype for these couple freshmen is a little overboard. Wiggins and Randle will be good, but the article compares Wiggins to Kevin Durant, who averaged 26 ppg as a freshman at Texas a few years ago. I will bet Wiggins comes nowhere close to that.

Wiggins is going to be a really good player but teams coached by Bill Self generally don't have guys average over 20 points a game. By the way just some fun facts about Self's tenure at Kansas. His home record is 145-7 and they have sold out every game since he's been there. In fact they have had sellouts for 180 straight games, going back to 2001.

these same prognosticators have not been that accurate.....they had Phil Pressey on their 1st Team Preseason All Americans last year, Cody Zeller as POY and Shabazz Muhammad as Freshman of the Year.

in 2011 they had Harrison Barnes & Jared Sullinger as their two top Players of the Year....and both years had guys on the 1st & 2nd team that ended up not belonging there.

1 year ago many of these prognosticators were drooling over another incoming freshman, and some picked him as their Preseason Player of the Year for 2012-13- Nerlens Noel, which I also thought was ridiculous. He was never as good as Anthony Davis and he lacked an offensive game.
Before he got injured, he played in 24 games and averaged just 10.5 ppg- not exactly Player of the Year numbers.

more along the lines of what scouts & recruiters do....
nowadays the writers vote based largely on potential rather than on actual performance...
players like Josh Selby, Kyle Singler, Harrison Barnes, Byron Mullens, Enes Kanter, Noel, Zeller, and others were all given preseason honors by various services, although some freshmen did live up to expectations - Derrick Rose, John Wall, Anthony Davis..
Overall I have not been impressed that most of these writers are any more accurate than the average well studied college basketball fan or the folks on our mesage board.

BTW - these guys have three separate Kansas freshmen on the Freshman All American 1st Team - http://zagsblog.com/articles/snys-pr...erica-teams-2/
