  • New variant of "mercy rule" upsets fans & parents

In California football they don't want lopsided scores - even though it's been happening for centuries and people get over it...

It is not enough to implement a mercy rule, shorten the game or keep the clock running, now......

Now they want to fine the coaches and ban them if their team wins by 35 points!

The way this is going where we penalize those who are successful, it is only a matter of time until they declare the winner to be the team with the least points...

Usually, when a mercy rule becomes a bone of contention it's because the policy isn't instituted soon enough, until after a game is already far out of reach. Yet in one Northern California community the opposite is unfolding, with parents furious about a new rule that they feel is cheating their children and coaches of football and money wasted on fines. The goal is to win the game. After that, the kids could learn a lot about sportsmanship and compassion. Most people who have coached have been on both sides and know what it feels to be defenseless with an inferior team. I don't know too many experienced coaches who are against mercy rules.

And I don't know too many real winners who haven't faced daunting adversity and yes...loss. Winners pick themselves up and work hard to get better (or find something else that they can excel in).

Compassion is great...but at what cost? Inferior athletics? Entitled brats?

Everyone should be lucky enough to be on both sides of a blowout...some are...some aren't. That's life...and coincidentally...my point.

I'm not talking about eliminating blowouts and losses, I'm talking about eliminating embarrassing the other team after it is clear which team is far superior. A football game that starts a running clock when it is 40-0 is still a blowout even if it ends 40-14. You get your blowout and also get to show respect to the opposing players and coaches. Win win.

In the Junior Football League (8-14 year old tackle) here in central Illinois there is a rule that you can't win by more than 40 points or it's a forfeit. Win or lose it doesn't make any difference though as there are no standings kept or a playoff after the season.

Most of the time these rules are set up for the ego's of the adults. The kids dont care that much as long as they have fun. If you asked them the score of a particular game a few weeks back they would not rememeber. It is the adults that screw it up for everyone. Keep the adults out of it the kids would be fine
