  • This year's HOT SEAT

What's a preseason preview without a list of coaches on the hot seat...

2013-14 coaches on the hot seat - includes lots of former mid-major guys who moved up just a few years ago...

    Tony Barbee - Auburn
Rick Barnes - Texas - gets great players but underachieves
    Ken Bone - Washington State
    Ben Braun - Rice
Brad Brownell - Clemson (he was the hottest commodity just 4-5 years ago)
Jeff Bzdelik - Wake Forest - keeps getting hired despite underperforming
Johnny Dawkins - Stanford - perhaps proof that just because you're from the Coach K-tree doesn't mean squat
    Mark Fox - Georgia
    Tom Pecora - Fordham
    Buzz Peterson - Wilmington
Oliver Purnell - DePaul - should be gone already but DePaul has to be running out of $
    Eric Reveno - Portland
    Keith Richard - Louisiana-Monroe
Craig Robinson - Oregon State (this guy's on the list every year - seems he's well connected..)
Herb Sendek - Arizona State - also seems to be on the list almost every year

I guess all the MVC coaches are pretty secure - maybe the closest in our conference might be Marty Simmons

Yeah, I think Marty may be the only one...maybe Marshall if he doesn't take the Shox back to the final 4.

among the teams on our upcoming non-conference schedule...
Arizona State's Herb Sendek, UW-M's Rob Jeter, & IUPUI's Todd Howard might all be on the hot seat..
Howard is only in his 3rd year but...another 6-26 (1-15 in conference) season like last year - after just 3 & 4 years ago Hunter had them at (25 wins & 19 wins) might just put him on the hot seat..

...UW-M's Rob Jeter...on the hot seat....
one of the Milwaukee sports writers really unloads on UW-M's Rob Jeter AND the entire UW-M basketball program...before the season even starts..
Jeter has gone 28-38 since he was offered the head coaching job at BU in 2011...last place last year & picked last this year.
I'm going to keep on keeping on until somebody with power, influence and common sense does something about the basketball program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

"Prospects dim for Panthers basketball ... again"

There are certain things, beside flowers, that are perennials.

..You can add this column to that list.

This marks, I think, the third straight year I've written this column and I'm going to keep on keeping on
until somebody with power, influence and common sense does something about the basketball program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

At some point in time, that somebody will ask the question, "Why does UWM have a basketball program?"

..I'm not sure how much more evidence is needed that virtually nobody cares about the Panthers basketball team.
They draw almost no fans, no matter whether they play on campus or Downtown in the U.S. Cellular Arena.

...under Rob Jeter, it's been a steady march downhill. Last year they were last in the Horizon League.
This year they are again picked to finish last behind such powerhouse teams as Oakland, Detroit and Youngstown State.

...Jeter makes over $400,000 a year and has a contract for another three years after this one. Hard to believe. He has a 129-127 record.
With the kind of success he has had, any athletic director would be looking hard for a new coach.

..So, let's just throw in the towel and move on."

Just thought I'd see how all these guys are doing so far...

          Tony Barbee - 4-1
          Rick Barnes - 5-1
          Ken Bone - 2-3
          Ben Braun - 2-3
          Brad Brownell - 5-1
          Jeff Bzdelik - 5-1
          Johnny Dawkins - 5-2
          Mark Fox - 1-4
          Tom Pecora - 3-2
          Buzz Peterson - 4-4
          Oliver Purnell - 3-3
          Eric Reveno - 4-3
          Keith Richard - 2-1
          Craig Robinson - 3-1
          Herb Sendek - 6-1
          Rob Jeter - 6-2
          NIU/Montgomery - 3-2

most are thus far safe except perhaps those who are at or under .500

I doubt any MVC coaches are on the hot seat - unless it's Marty Simmons, as the other ones are all too new..or doing well.

Oliver Purnell - despite the length of his contract - still has to be on the hot seat

Also Oregon State's Craig Robinson probably would be fired if it wasn't for his "connections"..but his team lost again last night to Akron,
Oregon State has played the weakest schedule of all Pac 12 teams - but Oregon State has also lost to DePaul & Coppin State.

Lamar's Pat Knight is only a couple slots above the worst RPI in D-I -

Houston is an enigma - they have recruited and landed numerous top recruits, even Top 20 and 5-Star kids - but James Dickey seemingly can't win with them, losing to San Jose State, La Lafayette...They now move up to a stronger conference, the AAC

UTEP isn't playing very well - they just lost at home to New Orleans - who are just coming off DIII and had not won on the road in nearly two years. But what they have invested in hiring Tim Floyd probably prevents them from cutting him loose.

Maryland fans want mark Turgeon fired...some want him gone mid-season!!

Oregon fans are debating who should replace Dana Altman - not because he's on the hot seat - Dana's doing a great job but the fans are sure he'll get lured away the next time one of the premier schools like UCLA or Kansas hires...

Lot's of people thought this could or should be Rick Barnes' last year at Texas...

but he's gone from hot seat to
Big 12 Coach of the Year
