The writer at the Albuquerque Journal has a column about the Mountain West Preseason Poll...

he received his ballot to vote on the teams and individuals and from what he says the top two candidates for the Mountain West Conference Newcomer of the Year...
are BOTH players who we've been talking about and who were BU recruiting targets...

One is Deshawn Delaney who is now at New Mexico, and the other is Tulane transfer Josh Davis, who is now at San Diego State and eligible immediately.

He's already hinted how he will vote the league's finish...
    1- New Mexico
    2- Boise St.
    3- UNLV
    4- Utah St.
    5- SDSU
    6- Nevada
    7- Colorado State
    8- Wyoming
    9- Air Force
    10- Fresno St.
    11- San Jose St.

BTW - that means that Dave Reynolds should be submitting his ballot for the MVC preseason awards pretty soon...
in each of the past several seasons he has revealed in his blog who his selections were.

Before he's ever played a game there - some, like Blue Ribbon Yearbook, are selecting UIC's Kelsey Barlow as Preseason Newcomer of the Year...
He has not played in a year and a half since getting booted off the Purdue Boilermakers after repeat incidents, reported failed drug tests, and then finally - an incident which was a bar fight and "public intoxication".

BTW - another Horizon League prediction

One CBSSports guy has Evansville at #3. That's the largest variation of anyone picking, since the others have Evansville at 5,6,7,7 &8.
I can't see Evansville finishing that high (3rd), since they lost more talent from last year than anyone in the MVC! 4 solid starters- Colt Ryan, Ned Cox, Troy Taylor, and Lewis Jones- have graduated, plus, part-time starter Jordan Jahr was kicked off the team, and reserve Jordan Nelson has transferred.
Marty Simmons would be Coach of the Year if he can finish 3rd- Evansville does not have a point guard, except a couple unproven freshmen (Duane Gibson & Jaylon Brown) who were more scorers than true PG's in high school. Their other new players are also all freshmen who do not seem likely to replace the nearly 75% of scoring and rebounding that the Aces lost- the others in their incoming freshman class consists of shooting guard Blake Simmons (Marty's son) who was a high scorer at a small level high school, but was not felt to be D1 talent by many, SG Christian Benzon from Denmark, and Tyler Ptacek, a late signee who is another small school guard who had very little D1 interest. I suspect one or more of this freshman class could redshirt.
They also have a redshirt freshman forward eligible to play David Howard.

The same guy, Norlander, who picked Evansville 3rd, also picked Bradley lower (8th) than any of those other writers,
he picked ISU higher (6th) than anyone else, SIU higher (7th) than anyone else, Drake lower than anyone else (10th),
and UNI lower than anyone else..
he's definitely not following the crowd with his picks..

I know this is just a joke, but taking one of the worst teams in the counry to where Davis will be this year is a pretty remarkable accomplishmet. It sure beats 8th & 10th.

It's a preseason poll, not the final standings.
