Tragic event at Wichita State

further reports say DJ Bowles did indeed have a cardiac arrest while practicing and had to be shocked by staff with an external defibrillator..
he has subsequently gone to Mayo Clinic and now has an implanted (internal) defibrillator.
There are some who will say that he might be able to play with such a device but extremely few players ever had - for 3 reasons...
-first - because of risks & liability - if someone clears the player to play and he has another life-threatening event or sudden death then it is a severe tragedy. This is why Nick Knapp never played..
- second - if the defibrillator fires off when the player is exerting himself then it is unlikely he'd be allowed to play - and yet that is what it is in him for...
..this is what Emmanuel Negedu experienced
-then it is possible that as part of the treatment for his heart he'd also need medicines to prevent rhythm problems and the meds may interfere with exertion at maximum levels - this is what happened to Hank Gathers, & when he stopped his meds - in order to play better, he arrested and died...

I saw that - but as I noted - Emmanuel Negedu also tried playing - as did local kid Nick Knapp & others - and I am impressed by their desire & courage, but thus far it is difficult to find anyone who has been very successful with one implanted.....Negedu was unsuccessful at his comeback, unfortunately
Studies show it's safe to try to play sports with a defibrillator so I hope DJ comes back!

that's true and BU still honored four years of scholarship and Pierre graduated....
...that was a tough situation as Pierre was possibly the most talented kid ever at Bradley - he had Danny Granger-type skills and Dick Versace believed he was a sure NBA-er
Wichita will honor the scholarship but has reportedly denied clearance for Bowles to return to the team & play

WICHITA, Kan. -- D.J. Bowles has been denied medical clearance to return to athletic participation by the WSU-ICAA and the medical staff due to a cardiac condition, but has been extended an opportunity for Wichita State to honor all four years of his scholarship aid, Director of Athletics Eric Sexton announced today.

one other report is that Bowles is not decided yet..will seek other opinions and possibly look for a school to play elsewhere...
Plenty of doctors believe that patients can return to vigorous sports, but...almost all agree there are potentially serious risks, as well as complications
The #1 risk is that even with a defibrillator, the possibility of sudden death still exists. In MAYO's own study they found 320 people who died after receiving an implanted defibrillator so it is not rare.
The most significant thing this study uncovered was the more the device actually functioned, the more often it actually fired off, then the more the repeat shocks adversely affected the heart muscle and caused it to malfunction further as time went on - so the simultaneous use of medicines to control or reduce the chance of the heart rhythm problems was advised.
Since Bowles' heart went into some type of "standstill" and had to be shocked, a defibrillator would not prevent that happening again in the future, though it may help revive him.
And if it does happen while he's playing basketball (and the fact that it happened once already makes that a legitimate fear) then you would hope the defibrillator functions and shocks him - but that is not always guaranteed.
So the final decision comes down to a mix of medical and liability concerns.

Here's an unfortunately similar situation...
Allan Chaney - who went to Florida - but was unhappy with playing time so he transferred to Virginia Tech.
Then in 2010 he was diagnosed with a heart condition and had a defibrillator place....however - Virginia Tech would not clear him to play but hisown medical doctor did clear him - so he looked for another school to play at and finally landed at Longwood.
After some delay due to another surgery being required on his heart, as a 6th year senior he was granted an extra year to play at Longwood. However - during a game two weeks ago, his defibrillator activated and shocked him. He has now been advised to give up playing altogether.
Allan Chaney (13) Forward - Chaney finished his HPU career with averages of 14.6 points and 8.1 rebounds in 35 games. He posted nine double-doubles and
Chaney was trying to play with a defibrillator in place - but this article says only one player has ever completed a full season of college basketball with a defibrillator implanted - and now that this event happened two weeks ago it is likely Chaney will retire.
The story of High Point senior forward Allan Chaney is one college basketball fans may be familiar with.
This article recounts the case of Woodruff kid Nick Knapp
Nick Knapp was high school basketball star in Peoria, Ill, when his heart suddenly stopped beating during game two years ago; Knapp and his doctors say he has recovered from collapse; Northwestern University told him he would not lose scholarship it had offered him, even if he never played basketball again; Knapp is required to attend team practices, but school will not allow him to touch basketball because it says he is at increased risk of death while playing; Knapp is suing Northwestern to allow him to play; photo (M)
