NCAA looking to take bids for location of "First Four"
NCAA looking to take bids for location of "First Four"
Dayton has been the host of the "First Four" play-in round of the NCAA Tournament for the last 10 years, but that may end as the NCAA has turned down Dayton's proposal to continue hosting the event. The NCAA reportedly now wants to solicit bids from other sites to maximize their profits.
Dayton may be losing the First Four as the NCAA takes it's tournament kickoff out to bid. What are some locations that could serve as an alternate location for the event?
the "First Four" are almost always teams who are NOT at all likely to be name-teams or big draws...the lowest eight seeds...plus they are often playing 1000-2000 miles away form their fan base...
(in 2013 they were Liberty, NC A&T, Middle Tennessee, St. Mary's, LIU-Brooklynn, James Madison, Boise State, LaSalle)
no matter where you play such games, it'll be tough to get anyone interested..
I think this "First Four" has done as well in Dayton as it would anywhere - it would be a huge mistake to move it farther west and add the yawn-factor to the mass of eastern fans...

I agree. I think that the people of Dayton have embraced attending these games as much or more than folks in any other city would. My guess is that more locals attend because "it's their thing" than what the tournament draws from the teams involved.
some think NCAA really has no plans to move it elsewhere - but they are using the announcement as a bargaining chip to make the Dayton people grovel and offer concessions and breaks...
The NCAA has been taking bids for the First Four/Play-in game since the beginning, but has chosen to give the games Dayton everytime. This isn't the first time the NCAA has turned down a long-term proposal to keep the games in Dayton. IMO, it's really a non-story.
