Marshall University's leading scorer last year was Elijah Pittman, and he was their only returning starter this season. He played high school ball in Covington, Kentucky and was a HS teammate of a 2010 Bradley recruit Ricardo Johnson.
Well, he seemed to have a good thing going for him, and would have been the star of the team returning this season then this happened-
Often incidents like this get handled quietly and dismissed when they involve star athletes, but this seems more serious and is a grand jury indictment, and this guy appears to be in real trouble, facing the real possibility of up to 1 year of jail time plus big fines!
But here is what is strange- The indictment which was handed down by a grand jury on July 31, was never reported by any media outlet until August 13, almost 2 weeks later. But even more strange is that the assault for which Pittman was indicted happened way back on October 10, 2012. That was before the 2012-13 season even started. Yet it seems the assault, in which Pittman assaulted another student and knocked him unconscious and seriously injured the guy, was nicely covered up by police, Marshall University, and their local media and nobody at Marshall ever reported anything. Pittman was never disciplined in any way, and he played in every game last year.
In fact, now even after the guy was indicted and is out on bail, and the news has finally been reported, Marshall coach Tom Herrion still refuses to suspend or discipline Pittman in any way, and intends to take him on their tour of Canada starting tomorrow and allow him to play! Nobody among the coaches or administration at Marshall has spoken publicly, and apparently nobody in their local media cares.
But he will travel to Canada tomorrow for Marshall's preseason tour of Canada, and apparently Coach Tom Herrion plans to play him as if nothing has happened.
