Good luck to Donivine - seems he's waited forever to get his chance to play
BTW - Evansville's Ryan Sawvell is also on that tour and is blogging...he had 6 pts/10 rebs in yesterday's game
Purple Aces junior Ryan Sawvell is taking part in the Global Sports Academy and is currently on a 9-day trip through Europe. He has graciously agreed to share his experiences in an online diary that will be updated throughout his trip and will provide an inside look at his experience! Below is his summary of the first day of the trip:
Here's their itinerary
-
One other local team is out of the country....
The Chicago State Cougars have gone to Costa Rica....
in case you're wondering -- Chicago State has had horrible budget problems so you gotta wonder how they could afford to go to Central America??
Well - maybe they found a way to use state funds but they do have friends in high places - friends like Smokey Robinson
BUT - here is one answer how they came up with the money -- they arranged GUARANTEE GAMES and instead of the payment for those games
going into the Athletic Dept. or school coffers to offset state taxpayers subsidizing their athletic department - they channeled those guarantee game payments to the travel agencies...
Hmmm....tricky!!! Robbing Peter to pay Paul....(or to pay Sports Tours)
BTW - just maybe Chicago State has changed!!!!
...note that for the first time ever - Chicago State's basketball APR score was a PERFECT 1000!!
BTW - here's another odd way that state schools handle their money --
University of Illinois got a couple hundred thousand buck from the Big Ten as part of the forfeited shares of revenus from Penn State's travails...
this is hard earned cash that should help lower costs for U of I students - but...
Instead, the U of I - just gives it all away then claims credit for generosity and gets some nice press..........

Former Bradley Brave Donivine Stewart is now eligible at SIU-E and is their starting point guard.
Tonight SIU-E hosted St. Louis University in front of a sellout crowd. SLU was too strong for SIU-E, but Donivine was their leading scorer with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. SIU-E is very undersized, starting 4 guards and a small forward.

Good player. I wish that my alma mater had made a better run at him. He reminds me of a guy who played at EIU about 20 years ago. Gerald Jones was generously listed at 5' 10" but averaged about 14 ppg from his sophomore through senior year at Eastern.

Seems like there were a few people who said he was not a D1 player?

He may not have been a top-flight guard in the MVC, who knows. I believe he would have been a solid player if given a chance. But I was referring to a few who went further and felt he should have gone D3 and was not a D1 player at all. Good to see him playing well at SIU-E. I think he'll have a good career there.

I heard that he was encouraged by our staff to look at DII & DIII and there were definitely fans who said the same thing
Keep in mind - he is effectively a "freshman" - tho a little older...
He played in only a few games and had just 50 minutes of playing time (all of which was deep garbage time) prior to this season ..
The caliber of opponents he is facing (SIUE's SOS is around 100) - is not bad - and they have Oregon State coming up next..
