  • Predictions 2013-14

OK - one single thread for any and all predictions --
Let's see who is bold enough to leave their thoughts on the upcoming season...

I will start it off -
(knowing full well that some will have the urge to try to swipe at anyone whose
predictions are even slightly inaccurate - but be not afraid -- if the worst they
can find is that maybe some player like TCS didn't turn out as well as you
predicted in 2007, the I think for the most part that's proof we have some very
astute fans here and our predictions are generally pretty danged good.)

    Here goes:

Preseason- we will win all four games in the Bahamas. I cannot find any example in history of any D-I team ever going to the Bahamas and playing one of these low level club teams and actually struggling or losing.

Non-conference- we should have at least 10 wins in the non-conference part of the season! Jacksonville State, Alabama State, CMU, Chicago State, UTPA, IUPUI, UW-M, IPFW, Portland, and Pacific have to be in the win column for us to even keep an RPI of 100. We could also possibly surprise USF, Illinois, or ASU!

Conference- given that our two losses to Creighton should now be two wins, and given how far Drake, Evansville, & ISU have fallen - it would seem a no-brainer that if we won 7 last year, we ought to get at least 9-10 Valley wins this year.
The favorite for MVC scoring leader and POY plus the league's toughest returning rebounder are nice things for Geno to have on the roster.

Post-season?- OK - I will stick my neck out -- that if we have 19-20 wins we're gonna easily be able to buy a couple home games & wins in the CIT or CBI and end up with 21-22 wins minimum.

This should be enough to make fans happy and get the attendance up some - and get some good press, although we all know that 2007, 2008, and 2009 saw us winning 21 or 22 and some unhappy fans still grumbled endlessly...so be forewarned.

But - I think a winning season with 21 or 22 wins will even get talk next spring of some team who is looking for a new coach might come calling (like this fan at Vanderbilt who is thinking of someone to replace Kevin Stallings!)
...although I think the "buyout" will keep Geno here.

12-1 or 11-2 in the noncon wouldn't shock me. I'll predict 11-2. The only games that should give us trouble are Illinois, AZ State, Pacific and South Florida. The first 3 because they should be top-100, the fourth because they whipped us last year. Chances are none of them are NCAA teams so they should all be winnable, but you have to give the edges to Illinois and AZ State because they're on the road. Both programs are down so there's really no chance here for a premiere, signature type win, and that's the unfortunate thing about this year's schedule. It looks like it was assembled by Tim Jankovich. I wouldn't mind so much if it weren't for the fact it costs us league standings tiebreakers, and it forces the team to go near undefeated to assemble an at large resume.

Losses in conference at Missouri State, at Northern Iowa, and x2 vs Wichita and Indiana State. 12-6 record and 4th place due to losing head to head tiebreaker with UNI over our weak noncon SOS.

23-8 heading into Arch Madness, beat 5 seed MSU, lose to 1 seed Wichita, 24-9 final record and NIT bid.

NCAA will be expected in 2015. I doubt a BCS school offers Geno until an NCAA appearance but if it happens, you just keep hiring the best and brightest.
    BRADLEY BASKETBALL
    -2 NCAA Title Games
    -3 NCAA Elite Eights
    -4 NCAA Sweet 16s
    -4 NIT Championships

After some evaluation of our opponents, here is this year's prediction:

10-3 preconference (losses at ASU and UI, and a loss in Las Vegas)
      10-8 in MVC
      1-1 in tournament

21-12 and on the outside looking in for an NIT bid because of poor SOS

I would guess somewhere around 20-10 and fourth in the conference (maybe 11-7 in conference). Nothing great, nothing bad - just middle of the road. I assume most everyone moves up one slot in conference because of the Creighton/Loyola switcharoo.

          9 - non-conference wins
          10 - conference wins (5th place)
          1 - MVC tourney win

A post-season bid in either the CBI or CIT.

            Let's get optimistic...
11-2 Non-conf (Groce will never play us again after we beat U of I, again)
12-6 MVC (Tie 4/5 place, WL wins POY)
            2-1 MVC Tourney (2nd place)
            0-1 NIT

I think what really matters this year for Geno is the MVC record/place.

I think that #6 is about right, but would be satisfied with Top 5 and a 9-9 record.

And I realize we have a lot of newbies, but finishing in the bottom 4 would be a disappointment.

I think most of us had realistic thoughts of competing for an MVC title in Year 4 of Geno's tenure, and finishing 7th or worse would delay any thoughts of doing that as early as next season with Walt and Pickett graduating.

Teams we should finish ahead of:

              SIU
              Loyola
              Drake
              ISU-red

              Chance to finish ahead of:
Indy St. (that Odum dude finally graduates this year!)
              Missouri St.
              Evansville

Shoot!! Who besides the Shockers in our league is considered really good heading into the season??

I would venture to say that #2 is up for grabs among 4-5 teams!

                Prediction-
Walt Lemon will lead all Braves in steals during the Bahamas trip and will lead the MVC this coming season

I'm looking for a 5th place finish as we do have a lot of newcomers. This summer practice and trip should hurry their education a little. Actually, I would think 4th through 6th is possibility.

I haven't seen the new players at all and probably used the penny to arrive at my guess.

I am hoping a higher finisher but am trying to be realistic and not put a lot of pressure on the team.

                          You guys want some encouragement??

                          Here's a BASKETBALL EXPERT's precitions form 2007...
Gregg Doyel of CBSSports predicted the BEST and WORST coaching hires in 2007...

Here's who he said were the BEST

Kentucky - Billy Gillispie - (LOL - canned after just two bad seasons at UK)
                          He then lauded Gillispie..
Not just a home run, this was a walk-off grand slam. In all of college
basketball, and this includes that cute little bugger down there at Florida,
Gillispie was the perfect hire for Kentucky. By the time he's done running
Louisville out of the state, the Cardinals will be getting their mail in Missouri.

WVU – Bob Huggins - (not bad but WVU was only 13-19 this past season)

John Pelphrey – Arkansas - (fired after 4 yrs) - the right guy considering its first selection, Dana Altman, pulled a humiliating about-face after one day.

Harvard – Tommy Amaker - (not bad but it took Amaker six years to win one NCAA tournament game)

Jeff Bzdelik – Colorado - (fired after 3 years - now coaching Wake Forest to the bottom of the ACC)

Here's who he said were the WORST

Stan Heath – South Florida - (mediocre and probably on the hot seat)

Steve Alford – New Mexico - (has done pretty well)

Gregg Marshall – Wichita State - (has done outstanding)

Mark Turgeon – Texas A&M - (made NCAA all four years there then was hired away to Maryland)

Tom Lickliter – Iowa - (OK - he got this one kinda right)

well - I can excuse a loss to a decent exhibition opponent in the preseason when we are trying lots of different & new things - we still gain from the game...

but I cannot find where any of those Bahamian teams have ever beaten a D-I opponent, but this season three D-I's have lost games in the Bahamas - BU, Manhattan, and Hampton
...Maybe they are getting better but more likely they caught some home cooking.
