Baseball great Don Mattingly (current manager of the LA Dodgers) has a son, Preston Mattingly, who was drafted out of high school (Evansville (IN) Central) by the Dodgers in the first round of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft. He struggled for the last 7 years, never making it out of A-level ball.
He finally gave up and quit pro baseball. But after returning home to Evansville, he started working with his old basketball coach, who also coached Bobby Knight's son. His coach called Pat Knight and got Preston Mattingly a tryout for the Lamar University team. He impressed Knight enough and was offered a scholarship. He will turn 26 years old in a month, and will be a freshman at Lamar University this fall and play basketball for Pat Knight.
He averaged 21 ppg as a senior in high school, and says he was always a better basketball player than a baseball player.
