  • Bradley summer recruiting

With the AAU season in full swing, we are starting to hear some names of players Bradley is looking at for the classes of 2014 and 2015.

Bradley just offered a scholarship to Joseph Toye, a 6'6" guard/small forward from Chicago Whitney Young HS. He plays for Meanstreets AAU program. He was not a big scorer on his talented Whitney Young team last year, but he has been very impressive and scoring a lot of points in AAU play so far.

Bradley has also offered Myles Carter, a 6'8" power forward from Chicago St. Rita HS, and who also plays for the Meanstreets AAU program.

These are continuing a trend of a very new type of recruit on the hilltop, at least in the past couple regimes.

When was the last time that a kid we would be talking about in the spring ends up at BU? It seems that names pop up in the fall out of know place and we sign them and then the same thing happens in the spring signing period. I cant remember BU signing a kid in the fall that was talked about early?

Donivine is really the last major one I remember, DSE, JP, but those were all talked about because they were local. SM was talked about and signed (who had an obvious BU connection), but I agree, it's pretty rare.

Early commitments were much more common under the previous coach. We started recruiting Sam Maniscalco at the end of 2005, early in his junior season, and he verballed in August 2006, before his senior season in high school and more than a year before coming to Bradley.
Will Egolf also verballed in August prior to his senior year.
Marcellus Sommerville was rumored to be considering coming to Bradley when he left Iowa after his redshirt-freshman year in 2002, and he committed to BU before his year at juco, a year before he came to Bradley.
Eddren McCain committed to Bradley in September, 2007, over a year before he started at Bradley in 2008. And so did Chris Roberts, and there were many more.

Help me here, guess I don't understand what difference it makes what time of the year a kid commits. Would it be nice to have all rides filled in the fall. yes probably but what matters most to me is that we fill them with better kids than we're losing and if that's in the Spring so be it.

I don't think it matters much, though I think most coaches would rather target kids early and land their top choices, rather than scurry late in the recruiting cycle to fill their scholarships with recruits left over after many are off the market. Wouldn't you agree? There may still be a few quality recruits left, but it may be harder to find them.

I was just responding to this question, that we have had early commitments in the past-

My point wasnt so much about early commits as much about the fact that the names we read about being on BU's radar are not the ones we will end up signing this fall or in the spring. It seems that the names that are out there now in the past are almost unimportant based on history.

When a college coach recruits he starts off with so many names then during the year they get whittled down to a final tally. Many things change over the course of a year. Kids waffle back and forth, they find out how important grades are etc. It is not an exact science. Just like in Sales..to get that one sale you have to contact 20 people

I'm more interested in when the kid signs his LOI than when he's gives his verbal. Especially when BCS schools start sniffing around.
