  • Illinois' Richard Semrau likely to redshirt

He has left the team and returned home to recover from recent surgery. He will take 4 to 6 weeks to recover and Bruce Weber has said he will probably apply for a medical redshirt.
If Semrau redshirts, he will return next season as a freshman eligibility-wise. Since he is a similar player to 2007 recruits Bill Cole and Mike Tisdale, this IMO seems to make it a little more likely that either Cole or Tisdale or both would be redshirt candidates next year.

That is if Semrau returns. I have heard rumors that he's been homesick, kind of like Kyle Wilson a few years back.

In addition to Weber falling short on so many fine instate recruits, I think Bruce owes the Illini fans an explanation of
why he awards so many scholarships on players who don't have the ablitiy to contribute for several years if at all.
He's always whining about how his team has to play shorthanded, but it's because he has a bench full of marginal players who'd have been better off at a mid-major.
Semrau is just such an example.
I think he may have even had to redshirt in the valley.

Is Semrau the kid that showed up earlier this year and surprised everyone by running a sub-6 minute mile or something?

I actually think it was Carlwell, just can't recall. I know there are many of the Bradley-AND-Illinois fans on here to let me know.

As part of the ongoing and neverending issue of why Illinois never can recruit Chicago, I found this interesting discussion over on the Illinois board

It simply reiterates that the coaches and assistants at Illinois are basically AWOL in the Chicago area, even though there are two different assistants on the Illinois staff who are recognized as great recruiters instate and in the Chicago area.
So why do we see and hear non-stop that these guys are never in on the Chicago kids? This one response says that the Illinois assistants are taking days off right in the middle of the hottest recruiting periods!
            Does anyone have an answer?

All the more reason we sure don't have to fear Illinois stealing Matt Roth, but honestly I don't have an answer as to why a school like UIUC can't recruit in Chicago like DePaul, Memphis, Duke, UNC, and even Missouri can.

But it is all the more reason why none of the assistants on the Illinois staff will likely never get offers to be head coaches elsewhere.

                Update:
Richard Senrau actually is taking an "Incomplete" on this semester's work, and
is recuperating at his home in Ohio from the recent illness.
He is likely to be redhsirted, and a couple other Illini are ailing, too.

Bruce needs to shake up that staff if they want to win any recruiting battles. He doesn't have a Matt Painter recruiting for him anymore, and it shows.
