Interesting interview with Dr. Cross, Kirk Wessler, & Dave Reynolds: State of Bradley Athletics

Speaking of Bradley athletics, Dr. Cross said he intends to see every team compete for championships every year. But the last couple years we seen more last place finishes, and next to last place finishes than ever before.I just noticed the MVC track and field championships finished today, and the results show Bradley men finished a distant dead last, and the Bradley women also finished a distant dead last>> http://www.mvc-sports.com/trackfield...-championship/
And Bradley baseball lost again today to SIU. SIU is the worst team in the MVC next to Bradley, they swept the 3 game series, and now Bradley has lost 15 Valley games in a row and been swept by almost every team. They have now fallen to 1-17, and are so far in last place there is no chance of finishing any higher>> http://www.bradleybraves.com/ViewArt...DB_OEM_ID=3400
Softball didn't do much better. They lost 17 of their last 20 games and finished in 9th place.Bradley athletics is the laughingstock of the MVC.The BU admins should be ashamed, but instead, they just raise ticket prices and ask for more money.Time for some accountability. From PJ Star sports expert Kirk Wessler in his Jan. 10, 2012 column following 8th loss in a row at Drake-
"Yes, the Braves are better than they were when the season started two months ago. By a light year or two, they??™re better."
And from the PJ Star 4/26/12, Dave Reynolds-
"Fields and Grier both appear to be difference makers. If Bradley continues to add the right players around them, happy days may be ahead for the Braves after a long dry spell."

I think it's fair game to discuss the future of what all BU fans have put so much into - the future & direction of BU athletics --
I like the latest commit - build with quality freshman and a few top jucos and rare transfer -

we steal but swing and pop it up into an easy game-ending double play..... any baseball people out there....frustrating

Hey, just a quick update...Sure this would be caught by others.
As far as mens and womens track and field, Bradley doesn't compete in the field events or sprints. The program is tailored for the 800M distances on up. So, of course, they will finish at the bottom.
The program is geared and recruited to compete in Cross Country. We have seen the upswing there and will certainly see it this fall with the new LOIs adding to the program.

The players used to make a lot of the decisions and the coach only called something here and there...
but that's not the way it is now - the coaches call almost everything on every pitch and on every play..
there are even plenty of coaches who signal what to throw for each and every pitch...so I am certain whatever was called on that play was something other than what happened -
but the batter was definitely not totally on his own to pick a lousy pitch and pop it up.
Many coaches want the batter to take a pitch during a steal for obvious reasons such as this....
You can watch MLB all year long and not see ONE SINGLE PLAY such as this - a double play on a popup when a guy is stealing - in fact, I can't recall the last time I have ever seen it happen -
...also if it was a hit & run then the coach is also expected to know which players have the best success and not popping into double plays.
Anyway - BU had a FIVE run lead in the 9th inning - we shouldn't even be having this discussion...and the guy who was doubled off when stealing WAS an inconsequential runner - the winning tun was on third at that time and the runner on first broke towards 2nd as the batter popped up. The emphasis should have been to get the man home from 3rd - not steal to get a 2nd runner into scoring position..
SIU was in for a play at the plate and there was no reason to be running the man on 1st to get out of a double play situation.
Excuses, excuses...I have commented very little on BU baseball this year but they are not doing well and a major college coach earning $110-120K should be better than 1-17 with the players he has.

I'll give you that. The baseball team is definitely down this year.

Agreed. 1-17 along with the previous yearly records, and, well, I personally would hang my head in shame and hang up my spikes at BU. It wouldn't take the AD or Prez to fire me. My resignation letter would hit their office before they had a chance.... Seriously...

hindsight is better than foresight but ......
if you are saying our coach called a hit and run with one of the NATION'S best base-stealers on first and the CRITICAL 9th inning-game tying runner on 3rd base - then that's all I need to know to break into laughter...
you will never convince me in a million years that such a call is sensible...
it is extremely risky for a team that hasn't won a league game in like a zillion years...if that's the kind of risky ball we play when we have some of the NATION'S BEST HITTERS...then we deserve to be 1-17.
The runner on first has a stolen base success rate of an AMAZING 96.4% (27-28 ) and the infield was drawn way, way in and they likely would have conceded the SB to keep the runner on 3rd....so why let the guy swing - give the take sign !
