  • ISU signs another juco player

Must be searching for that Jackie Carmichael clone

Jamaal Samuel - the stuff on him is kind of obscure - they only give his high school stats...
but if you go to the South Plains site you see he did not play much -
averaged 2.2 ppg, hit 28.6% of 3-pointers and 50% of FT, plus 1.3 rpg.
    ..wonder if he'll redshirt...

His high school number were pretty impressive and yes his juco's are not. There was two big guys playing in front of him as sophomores that are going to DePaul and SMU so who knows. I think a redshirt is a big possibility for a kid that some are saying has only been playing basketball for a couple years. I get the sense that he is a great athlete with potential that Muller is willing to take a chance on. Like you said Carmichael was not heavily recruited.

well, I guess that depends a bit - on their schedule/strength of opponents, on number of shots taken, etc........
..they say he averaged 16 ppg/8 rpg as a senior in New Orleans and that he led his team to the "New Orleans 4A state semifinals" (I assume they really mean the Louisiana 4A state semi's)...

his high school was about 800 students (about what IVC or Canton have) and played in Class 4A in a state where they have seven classes.....
They were the 8th seed out of 32 in the 4A bracket - and got knocked out by Peabody Magnet School

Do you know how many kids in the US average 16 ppg in high school or 8 rpg --
practically every other team has a kid who hits those numbers...

Even bad teams have high scorers, you are exactly right. I think this was a kid who might be a redshirt possibility that the staff was willing to take a risk on. Only time will tell. Usually I am disappointed by teams biggest recruit and usually impressed with the lowest after watching them for four years.

A lot of juco kids, especially big men, who go on to get D1 scholarships and become good players put up poor numbers as a juco freshman. First, the adjustment from high school to juco is a big step, and second, junior college coaches will almost always play sophomores well ahead of freshmen to develop them and get them scholarship offers. The number of kids placed at D1 is the strongest selling point a juco coach can use when recruiting. So this kid could have a high potential, and I would never try to make a judgement just on his freshman numbers.

Another juco signing for Dan Muller and the ISU Redbirds-
Daishon Knight a 6'1" combo guard from Odessa CC in Texas, where he was a teammate of Auston Barnes. He was also a high school teammate of Omari Grier in Erial, New Jersey!-

That makes 8 new players for next year for ISU- 5 jucos, and 3 high school/prep commitments.

Interesting. There are rumors that one incoming freshman will not make grades.

That would be Tony Wills, correct?

Yes. I also wonder if someone has been asked to pay his own way for a year.

Most (well some) ISU fans seems to think Knight was only be going to be "allowed" to commit if they knew Wills wasn't going to qualify, so that is now the speculation. They are also still in on MiKyle McIntosh and a couple other SF/PF's. If Wills does qualify, then they would have to have a guy pay his own way if they sign anyone else (or someone else not qualify/transfer)

wow - ISU's lineup of short-term fixes more resembles what SIU put together in 2010-2012 with lots of jucos and prep school kids - most all of whom didn't last.....and got Lowery in trouble and fired..

How many jucos slash transfers did Bradley's sweet sixteen team have?

Bradley's 2005-06 team had a total of 5 junior college transfers (no 4-year college transfers). They were not all in the same class- 3 were seniors, 2 were juniors.

For the record, I and most Bradley fans had nothing against juco transfers if they help a team win, which these guys did. But there were a few people who seemed to think it was a mistake when Les did it. Now I don't see them complaining. Dave Reynolds wrote this critical article just 2 years after the Sweet 16 season attacking Jim Les for recruiting "Too Many Jucos"-

Word is the juco train will stop in the next couple days and Mikyle Mcintosh will visit.
