  • One of the top scorers in the nation is transferring

A sophomore shooting guard named Kyle Vinales - who averages 22 ppg as well as 4 assists per game, 37% from 3-pt & 81% on FT
He would be the 4th highest retuirning scorer in all of Division I next year - maybe even the 3rd best if McDermott goes to the NBA...

He is originally from the midwest (Detroit) and looking to play closer to home!

    I'd take him...

I would suspect somebody associated with a BCS-type school already has been in the kid's ear telling him he would be better off at Big Time University. We'll see where he transfers, and I'll bet it is a coach with a history of slightly sleazy activities.

you mean like the Seth Curry kid and when he up and bolted from Liberty & landed somewhere else??
...there was also once a kid named Jason Conley who was a 25 ppg scorer at VMI and suddenly up and transferred to play for Quin Snyder at Mizzou - he turned out to be kind of a flop, tho

Vinales ends up at Toledo -- citing post-season success as the reason for his choice
Vinales, who attended Central Connecticut State last season, announced that he will be a Toledo Rocket late Sunday night. Vinales averaged 21.6 points per game last year and is originally from Detroit.

Post-season success? Central Connecticut may not have had much recently, but they were last in the NCAA tournament in 2007, and have made the NCAA tournament 3 times since 2000. The last time Toledo made it to the NCAA tournament was 1980!

I noticed Toledo's lineup in 2012-13 had SIX different D-I transfers...
and now their 2013-14 roster will have SEVEN D-I transfers...
they are definitely in the running for Transfer-U - they even have one they got from Iowa State - rare considering how Iowa State's entire roster is kids transferring in there..

Kyle Vinales, the Central Connecticut leading scorer who announced on Twitter that he was transferring to Toledo because of the better chance of "post-season success", has now reversed himself. As of this morning, he removed all references of Toledo from his Twitter page. Then this afternoon he tweeted, "I've decided to wait a little longer to make my decision. I'm still open to recruiting".

Maybe he realized just how far Toledo is away from being a post-season team? Or maybe he started getting calls by other coaches to hold off committing?

I believe he was not a Division 1 player. Would he still have to sit out a year if he goes to a Division 1 school?

Actually, Central Connecticut is a Division I school. They play in the Northeast Conference along with Robert Morris, Bryant, Wagner, LIU, Mt. St. Marys, Quinnipiac, St. Francis (NY), Sacred Heart, Monmouth, St. Francis (PA), and Fairleigh Dickinson.
But even is he did transfer from a non-Division I school, the NCAA rules require he would have had to sit out a year after the transfer.

BTW, it doesn't happen very often that a lower division player transfers up to a Division I school. When it does happen, it is usually a walkon. But there was one instance of an NAIA player who transferred to an MVC school and became All-MVC- Matt Schneiderman. He was playing at tiny Morningside College of Sioux City, Iowa, a Division II NAIA school when Greg McDermott was named coach at Northern Iowa in 2001. McDermott had recruited him when he was the head coach at DII Wayne State College, and coaxed him into transferring to Northern Iowa in 2001. He had to sit out a year, but he went on to be a pretty good player at Northern Iowa for a couple years. He was Honorable Mention All-MVC in 2003.
