  • Rank the Coaches

Rank the BU coaches in recent memory starting with Coach Stowell ending through Geno's 2nd year...

Joe Stowell 197-147 0 reg season titles 0 ncaa, 13 years
    Dick Versace 156 - 88, NIT title, 1-2 ncaa
    Stan Albeck 75-71, 0-1 ncaa
    Jim Molinari 174 - 152, 1ncaa, 5 NIT in 9 year span
    Jim Les 154 - 140, sweet 16
Geno Ford 25-42, cit quarter finals

    my picks..

    1. Dick Versace (seems obvious took the program to National Heights)
    2. Jim Molinari (Ran a clean consistant program, league title, 4 2nds, 1 ncaa, 5 NITs)
    3. Jim Les (Great sweet 16 run carries weight, otherwise very mediocre results)
    4. Joe Stowell (different era, never won a big one)
    5. Geno Ford (has program on the up swing, could easily move up to the 3 slot with 2 or 3 good years coming up)
    6. Stan Albeck (Almost ruined bu basketball, used versace talent for an ncaa berth)

I would not put Geno into the rankings yet as it is way too soon to judge him.
And otherwise, I would have things almost the same as you, except I would put a Sweet 16 ahead of 1 NCAA game (a loss).

Can we add Orsborn and put him #1?

I can't go back to the Ozzie AJ days, and to be fair Stowell was in a different era so I will start with DV.

1)Mo--Im sure I will be the outlier here, but to me he rescued BU from disaster. And Stan was an utter disaster, even with an NCAA birth

2)DV--Sustained success, clearly number one except for the sanctions. Didn't stay clean, ran his mouth on the way out, "Do I look like I belong in Peoria" 2 NCAA births and a 32-3 team speak for themselves

3)JL--My feelings are well known. One of the best 6 weeks in history

4)Stan- Saved Hawk...But no clue how to recruit

Geno--If your judging on two years, hes the worst...But Im not judging on that..

I will say it again on Geno...He will be the first coach here in 50 years to not get fired.

IMO, DV would still be #1. He took over a program heading to oblivion, after a 14-14 record with all 5 starters back and a below .500 record overall in the MVC. For those who think the non-conference home schedule is bad now, check the 70's schedule.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

Srw, You missed some good years when Ozzie was the coach. (Out of your control)
              1). I'm old enough so Ozzie #1
2.) DV I'm not letting sanctions deter him from what he was able to do while here. Great recruiter also had good assistants.
3.) Mo 1 NCAA 4 or 5 NIT's recruited great kids no one else wanted. Still a great coach.
4.) Tie between Joe and Jim. AS far as coaching, nod goes to Joe maybe one of our better as far as knowing the game. Didn't have the extras others had to get players in here he needed to compete. Jim ,I think he gave everything he had to get our program where we wanted to be.Just proof experience is necessary to walk in those shoes. What concerns me about your reasoning is that 6 weeks out of nine years wouldn't equate that high to me. 9 years * 52 weeks =468 weeks. So 6 weeks /468 weeks =.0128%. That's about the same interest rate my saving account is drawing and I'm not happy with that either.
5.) Only putting Geno here because it's way to early to tell but I have to say I like what he's doing and I really think he will be near the top if he stays here for any amount of time. You say he's the worst. Not sure why you rate him the worst when he was dealing with someone elses players. Lets rate him when he's competing with his own players. There is a very simple reason we haven't been very good the last two years. I don't think I have to explain it to you . Do I?
6.) Stan, no explanation needed. Far and away the worst. Only good thing he did though was make The Hawk into a NBA'er.

I am extremely relieved to see someone else agrees with me on the subject above.

The Braves Sweet 16 appearance was almost the same to me as my White Sox winning the World Series. Never thought I would see it in my lifetime again, especially since DV was let go. After the 32-3 season I think it was possible.
