The teams remaining from the old Big East (minus the Catholic schools) will reorganize and rename themselves the American Athletic Conference.
It sounds like they want to leave themselves the option of expanding and absorbing teams that are not in the east, thus the dropping of any geographical terms. They also announced they want to be known as "The American" for short, and not as the AAC.
