The fact is- Rice acted badly, but to my knowledge, he didn't break any laws.
Throwing a ball at someone while constantly referring to them as a Lithuanian fa**ot, if it happened on the street would get you charged with a hate crime.

If what you are saying was even remotely true- every kid playing dodgeball would be guilty of a crime, and the police would be arresting millions of people for "hate crimes" that use slurs or act like jackasses.

here's something that smells a bit illegal but probably is borderline...
one of the athletic department assistants at RUTGERS, Director of Player Development Eric Murdock, who was fired last December -
was asking via a lawsuit for a "settlement" of $950,000 and appears to mention the "dam*ing video" in his letter requesting the $950K payoff.
Blackmail??
Anyway - so just how did the video surface??
All most reports say is that it "was leaked"..to ESPN who then posted it on their site...
BUT this site says it was the Director of Player Development Murdock who was the source..
BTW - a couple of independent questions...
A) Just what IS a Director of Player Development?
..I guess it is an extra assistant position created so that wealthy schools can hire more assistants than the NCAA allows...
Here's one official job description of "Director for Player Development"..
"..this position is responsible for assistaing student-athletes' transition into the college environment whileensuring
player development needs are addressed and met. Work includes serving as a liason between student-athletes
and internal/external departments/agencies as it related to player development; coordinating personal development
initiatives; referring troubled athletesto appropriate departments for assistance; and identifying and monitoring
at-risk student athletes. ...
Examples of Work Performed.."
(then it lists gobs of things such as overseeing student athletes during recruiting, being sure rules aren't violated, monitors
for signs of kids having either personal or academic troubles, talks with troubled athletes and gets them help...etc...

More fallout from this- the Rutgers AD was just fired.
IMO, this is damage control by the university president who is hoping to keep his job and yielding to all the pressure from media, etc.
If the Big Ten hadn't already accepted Rutgers and this had happened before they made their decision, would they have rejected them because of this? I suspect so.

The President has said he was told about abusive behavior by the coach, and signed off on the fine and suspension in December, but that he had not seen the video until now. That hasn't stopped many people, including legislators and campus demonstrations from calling for his firing.

Now Eric Murdock, the former Rutgers player and former Director of Player Personnel is now filing a wrongful termination suit after his extortion-like attempt didn't work.
Rutgers claims he was never fired, since he worked on a 1-year contract, as do the great majority of such assistants at all universities, and it was simply not renewed last year.

I work in law enforcement, this is different than a game of dodgeball. Change the location and participants of this incident and I guarantee the end result would be different. If dispatched to a park where where a game of basketball was being played and I was presented with clear evidence that someone shoved another individual and threw a basketball at them all while calling them a fa***t I can promise you that in the rare instance that no one was arrested on scene, all evidence would be sent to the states attorney office and a warrant and charges requested. I cannot promise a conviction but charges would be valid.
Precedent has been set in hockey for charges for on ice/field/court charges to be possible. It will not and should not be a common place but it can happen. Throw in that this is not a one time occurrence but a trend and I think Rice will lucky if getting fired is the end of this.
Given the very recent events at Rutgers University involving the suicide of a homosexual student due to on campus events one would think that extreme caution would be used in a situation like this. I do not believe that the University president should lose his job, especially if he was left in the dark to the full detail of the contents of the video were not divulged to him but this was absolutely handled inappropriately by all involved.
