over the years I have heard various opinions from all over the spectrum -- some saying it's better to bring in recruits that are high schoolers and then develop them -- UNI has done a good job of this and rarely depends on jucos..
other programs bring in lots of jucos and Wichita is a classic example of school that has done well with lots of jucos & transfers
Currently many of the recruits on our radar screen are juco kids ....and we haven't had very many who were brought in recently as freshmen that have helped much...
but what is everyone's opinion...
our local press seemed to criticize JL for bringing in too many juco kids...in fact, there was a column titled "Too many jucos" the year JL brought in Dunson, Roberts, & Taylor Brown - one of whom was a FOUR-YEAR player and not a typical juco and all were players who were extremely valuable and became our 3 best scorers a couple years later.
another column claimed few of the jucos paid off...calling it "foolish"....pointing to Tony Bennett & Theron Wilson as the only ones that were successful, ignoring Zach Andrews, Matt Salley, Will Franklin, Cellus, Boogie, and many other juco kids we've had.
Recruiting is hard and those who stand on the sidelines and have opinions are entitled to them but they don't likely know 80-90% of the facts that go into the determination...thus I think I will defer to our staff who know the inside info...
