there's such a premium put on good point guard play that the spot as POY is his to grab if he plays well...
but SMU finished middle-of-the pack in a conference that had five really bad teams, so they kinda got 5th place by default...
but their weak non-conference schedule and their near-60 RPI doomed them to the NIT.
They have to do a bit better to get whatever votes he'd need for Player of the Year, which generally goes to someone on one of the conference's frontrunners or NCAA-worthy teams...but packing the early non-conference schedule again this year with tons of easy home wins against softies such as Lamar, Eastern Washington, Texas Southern, Monmouth, & UIC already look like RPI killers...
