  • National Coach of the Year

interesting talk coming from all areas of the country..
people are throwing out the names of Krzyzewski, Crean, Self, etc...but I think the top five candidates are guys whose names were not on the front burner at the beginning of the season..

Here's who I think deserve the credit for the best coaching jobs...

-Miami's Jim Larranaga - Miami is a football school - nobody could ever turn them into a top ranked basketball school - right?
They were picked 5th but not much higher than anyone had picked Clemson, Georgia Tech, & Wake. They won the ACC handily & killed #1 Duke back on 1/23 90-63!

-Saint Louis' Jim Crews (& assistant Jim Platt) - yeah - they were picked to finish 2nd in the A-10 but they could have easily folded - plus nobody ever thought they do this well - they are in many people's views a TOP 10 team

-K-State's Bruce Weber was co-champ in Big-12 after Kansas was UNANIMOUS pick to win it and K-State was picked 5th

-Oregon's Dana Altman - picked to finish 7th but beat everyone handily to win the Pac-12 with the most wins in the league.
By the way - Altman was NOT Oregon's first choice when they were hiring - he was THEIR SIXTH CHOICE! - LINK

-..and I am going to throw in WIU's Jim Molinari - picked for next to last, then losing both his two all conference kids down the stretch - he got the absolute most out of the least.

    Just as a followup -

Jim Larranaga (Miami) won the Naismith Coach of the Year, the Associated Press Coach of the Year, The Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award (US Basketball Writers), and the CNN/Sports Illustrated Coach of the Year Award.

-The Sporting News Coach of the Year Award went to Saint Louis' Jim Crews

-The CBSSports College Basketball Coach of the Year Award & the John McLendon Coach of the Year Award (CollegeInsider.com) went to John Thompson III of Georgetown

That's crazy. Didn't they lose all 5 starters and a couple bench guys last year? What team in america outside of Kentucky can succeed after that?
